TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, if your son marries his Thai girlfriend, he may be able to stay in Thailand longer. He can apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa based on marriage, which can be extended yearly as long as certain financial requirements are met, such as maintaining a specified amount in a Thai bank account. However, caution is advised; marrying solely for a visa is often viewed unfavorably, and there are complex regulations and potential challenges if the marriage does not last.

If your son is married to a Thai person they are eligible for a Marriage Visa. There is a lot of paperwork to complete. I think the hassle is worth it, to live in Thailand but I find the tourist visa is an easier option. Perhaps one day my luck will change and I will feel differently but that isn't today (or the past couple of years)..

Despite all the adversed comments (which are cautionary in nature)
hopefully your son's aspiration come true, maybe he is one in a million who makes it.

Sounds like a bad idea if he wants to marry her just to stay longer. But the short answer is yes. Up to 90 days then 1 year with thai bank account that has
*****
0 baht in it.

Only if he pays 2 million Bth upfront, she will sort it out after money is deposited into her Thai bank account

marriage for a visa is the best option for him

Well...the absolutely disgusting answers I am getting make me sick. Fir the information of the keyboard warriors..my son is in late 50's he has known his wife for enough time..we know her family..we know the correct procedures..he covers the financial side of things..she is a lovely girl. All I was asking..for MY information..was about length of time these visa take and if there are unscrupulous agents taking advantage...so thankyou for the nice answers...the rest of you...just get lost. No more comments required.
I'm amazed at how many nonsense answers you're getting. Of course he can stay if married to a Thai by applying for a non-o based on marriage. I entered on a tourist visa four years, got married, applied for the non-o, and then 1 year extensions since then. It's very easy to do.
The hardest part is getting a bank account in his name only on a tourist visa so he can meet the 400k baht financial requirement. It was easier 4 years ago. An agent can help with that part, but not needed for the rest of it. Alternatively he can apply for the non-o in his home country and may be able to meet those financial requirements eaiser. It'll then be much easier to open the Thai bank account to meet the 1 year extension requirements.
You may want to ask this and any future questions on the Thai Visa Advice or Thai Visa Forum groups. The admins are extemely helpful and don't allow all these cynical trolls.
You should have said that in your initial post ! Well he needs to get the right visa then, go on to the UK Thai Embassey Web site, marriage visa, I think everyone assumed he was 18 !
lol..sorry I should have said he is a mature man...its just me wanting more info on visa's...been on embassy websites etc...followed all the regulations..but still at moment no results and I was concerned my daughter in law was being duped by the agent. She is also mature lady! But quite trusting .
Hope he has money cause that's only way to stay having the right income

If your son is old enough to get married, he should be able to figure out the stuff by himself. Or at least ask for himself🤪. Even being married to a Thai only allows you to get a non-immigrant O visa, which is good for 90 days.
that was 18 years ago. Not at all the same today, or even what it was 4 years ago when I did it. It's gotten MUCH harder and banks are less willing to open one for foreigners on anything other than a long term visa due to all the additional banking regulations every country has implemented since then.
you haven't been to Thailand a lot with that coment .pm me with your address, iv a few Irish Canadian truck drivers friend that can pop in and say hello for me

There's a lot of this way that way on this give him a realistic answer and let the lad make his mistakes .b4 finding the good rite one ,I think we have all made our mistakes, I know I made mistakes 20 years ago
Is this based on him knowing a person for 3 months?!? Red flags! 🤯

Mum if she was a bar girl tell him to end it there are millions of beautiful honest Thai women that have professional jobs especially nurses and teachers just don’t let him marry a girl from the bars
good I hope you every success I’m speaking from personal experience I was fleeced myself now I’m having a baby with a beautiful doctor training to be a cardiologist and I know she’s not after my money because she has more than me I treat her like she’s a princess and there are a few exceptions i wish them all the luck In the world as genuine Thai women are everything a man wants for a wife for sure
you need a good income and decent health insurance make sure he only brings pocket money that he can afford to lose and don't financially invest in the country

No ,,getting married to a Thai doesn’t effect the visa at all or length of stay ,,,
Oliver ********
Yes, as long as he has enough money in the bank or as income from abroad to meet the financial requirements for extensions of stay. But you'll also need to line up a back up wife, or two, in case of divorce / death, as that would affect his visa status.
This is the second time you're asking this question?
Steve *******
If he thinks getting married is the best thing to do then that’s a terrible option. Even the. He’ll have to go thru all the visa rubbish. Best to get any of the other visa options.
Are you supporting his decision or is time he left the nest? You have said nothing about the circumstances, his age and whether he has any means to support himself. Let alone anything about whether she has children and whether or not a bride price has been discussed and who is going to pay at it and what is being done with it? Is he not capable of asking these questions himself?
probably becasue it in no way impacts the answer to the question "If he marries his Thai girlfriend can he stay longer?". You ask a ton of questions then ask "is he not capable of asking those questions himself" when the op never even asked those questions.
It would perhaps have prevented all the trolls about mommy taking care of him, assumptions that he would marry for the sole purpose of staying in Thailand, or assuming his girlfriend is a bar girl with multiple boyfreinds and a husband. Why can't people simply answer the question without all the BS?
I answered his questions with questions which I thought was logical, clearly you don't. The simple answer would have been no but would that actually have answered anything? No..
the simple answer is yes, if he then applies for a non-o visa for being married to a Thai.
As far as the questions, you asked them and then acted as if the OP was the one asking all of them by saying "Is he not capable of asking these questions himself". So no, that is not logical. Also, every single question you asked has absolutely no bearing on if he could stay in Thailand if married to a thai. How the hell does knowing if she has children or if a bride price was discussed impact getting a non-o based on marriage?

Good job I said something. It has given you plenty to opine on. If I had said nothing nobody would have had the benefit of you opinion of my opinion. So on the other hand would you have even bothered to reply to him if I hadn't?
To give this the time it needs to see if this is a good decision, from back in the UK, he can get a multi-entry tourist visa, METV, that, if timed right, he can stay in Thailand for almost 9 months, with only crossing the border twice, and getting the 30 day extensions. This gives him time to see if this future "marriage" is real, and for the right reasons. There is always going to a four year university here, and getting his degree. That particular ED visa covers four years, as long as he attends classes, and passes. These are options he has to give himself time to think, and that won't have any negative impact on his future here, if things work out.
Christopher *************
Then you are doing the right thing but you should be telling us a bit about the background? I dare bet that there are a few on this site that thought they were married and weren't. Me for one. Bride price is supposed to be used to get something for the couple not to keep fot themeselves. Of course all things depend on her familly and the circumstances of their meeting etc. Please seek to find out if there are kids in the picture somewhere because they are very good at hiding them. If by chance there is somethingon the way do nothing until after the event just to be sure. A pre-nuptual is a very good idea too. Not to surprisingly a great many of them will nit agree to one and that is an excellent indicator.

My son married his Thai girlfriend..(because they love each other) but still struggling to get her a visa to visit UK to meet his family ! They have provided everything visa people have requested but 2 months on still no visa ! I don't know if agent she got is ripping them off
no doubt the visa application cost will triple and invariably a high percentage will fail not for any reason apart from uk getting money for nothing in the pretence of government
I believe this year UK citizen will be offered a 90 day free visa same as Indian and Chinese citizens David Cameron was in Thailand last month talking about offering Thai citizens free visa travel to the UK
yes heard that on news....not helping my son at moment though. He has a job in uk but hopes to retire to Thailand next year. She doesn't want to live in uk as she has property and does a lot of work with temples etc
don’t use agents. I have had g/f visitor visas, spouse visa children visa and never used an agent and never refused. Do the homework and provide the documents and no problem.
They make money from visas they just want to make sure there is no burden on the state.
This happens a great many times. There are a lot of requirements to meet to get the required visa and I know 3 or 4 that have been trying for quite some time. Some will never get one as attitude goes a very long way and some just do meet the criteria. There is a very good agent in Pattaya and he has a no visa no pay policy. I have knownhim for over 20 years, Costly but good.
Even if that statistic were true which I doubt it is, he probably just made it up out of thin air, all it would mean is that the only people suspicious enough to hire a private investigator turn out to be the ones that are being scammed, which is what you'd expect lol
there's services in thailand that investigate thai girlfriends and find over 90% of them are entertaining several foreign men while having thai husband and children. you think meeting someone means you know them? you butt out..
don't project your traumas and experience onto me.. there's services in thailand that investigate thai girlfriends and find over 90% of them are entertaining several foreign men while having thai husband and children.

It would cost less in the long run to do visa runs like everybody else
Yes the requirements are 800K = $ 22,000 usd as single or 400K = $ 11,000 usd as married thai because it’s two people to share expenses. For foreign married couples it’s $ 44,000 usd.😉
Ok, I don’t know the formal procedure regarding this, but when it’s finalised I guess he’s just another foreigner again. (Unless he’s got a child during the marriage).
I haven't personally looked into the actual Laws in Thailand. What I've read, including from very knowledgeable and respected people, is that once a foreigner is no longer in a relationship with their Thai partner, they no longer meet the Marriage/Spouse and no longer entitled to remain in Thailand. Their only way to stay would be if they qualify for a different type of Visa, unless they've maybe qualified as a permanent resident or Thai Citizenship. Having a child from the relationship might allow for staying in the country, but I wouldn't know.
As I thought. If you have a child from this marriage you can stay in Thailand as a dependent of a child on exactly the same conditions until the child is 20 years old. Then you’ll have to qualify for your own visa as everyone else.

You're coming across in a totally crass manner. Here's an alternative suggestion equally as crass. Rob a bank and stay a long time for free.
ask stupid questions get stupid answers, no mental gymnastics going on here. Maybe this dad will ask himself why his son is so helpless and something good can come out from this post
Why not take your own advice and stop being a hypocrite

Peter Ksenak I’m on a non o visa and do this every year when back to Oz so I know
I thought Savannakhet was the last embassy that gave the 1 year multiple entry non-o visa based on marriage without proof of funds, but they stopped about 6 months ago? I got mine just before they started requiring proof of funds and it was talked about for months.
actually I just looked now and they have put it up to 400,000 thb like everywhere mostly. I’m glad I looked now. So you mean there is no where now that will issue a non o visa based on marriage for an account less than 400,000 thb? Penang in Malaysia used to but not sure now if they do
Try purchasing a small condo since he is able to retire. Assume he's not of age for the retirement visa. If he's able to pay can consider the elite visa. Cheaper alt will be to get the non o
