Thailand restrictions are very recent, though. Due to 1) The scam centres over the border and to a lesser extent 2) Thailand signing up to CRS etc as it wants to join the OECD. Used to be so easy in Thailand. I once opened an account in a branch as I wanted cash from an account in a different town. I did not have the pass book so they would not let me withdraw. They let me open a new account though, transfer the money and then withdraw it from the new account. Quicker than going home to get the pass book.
Singapore really? I moved there in 2006 and easy to open an account with documents. I thought they had tightened up significantly for individuals? I left in early 2017 but my accounts still open. They know I do not have a visa there now as everything connected. Only restrictions were no Credit Card.
There is a reason why authorities do not issue hard and fast rules though and leave much to discretion. 🙂
As for DTV though I would say it needs some tweaking as any new product does after initial introduction and bedding in. Problem is the "Owner" of said product are no longer in a position to make changes :-)
I do not think there is a specific "Law" that does not allow certain visa holders the right or not to have a bank account. Nobody has yet pointed to the law in the Royal Gazette banning this. It seems to be down to the banks and how they implement BoT guidance and commercial decisions. Can tourists open bank accounts in your home country? I had been out of UK for 15 years and opening an account at home meant jumping through hoops. I doubt a tourist would qualify.
I am looking at this only through a New Product Development & Launch lens ( I worked in this area previously). There are other factors involved too. From a New Product viewpoint it needs to be tweaked post launch as data is available just like any new product. It is a good product though and has been a success given limited marketing.
I reckon your spending is about average for a DTV holder. So 50,000 holders would add a billion USD a year to the economy which is good (if my maths are correct). Tourist spend in 2024 was 42b which still below 2019 at 60b - hard getting back to that with market changes. Chinese tourists are high spenders.
That is not the calculation required is it? You are missing the point by a wide margin. The spending patterns are different. The DTV is not cannibalising the tourist market.
