Couldn't agree more, I only joined a week or so ago, and I am in two minds whether to stay. Majority of posts seem vitriolic, ignorant and based on a wealth of stupidity and prejudice.

@Al***
I know someone who lives in the Base, and before the virus coach loads of Chinese tourists would arrive daily. It’s pretty much nonstop rental tourists coming and going treating it like a hotel. You did the right thing.

Nice to see a positive post for a change! 😀

@Ma**
, sorry yes and students. My point is that doing any sort of border run or exit now will presumably preclude a return to the kingdom for most people. If you are in the bracket allowed to enter now, then I don’t see why you would want or need to go out and try and get back in.

How would you get back into Thailand if you go to Laos? I thought only people with work permits and diplomats etc were allowed to enter the kingdom at the moment.

Mick, this is quite a good article to give you some honest information:

please don’t take the tone with me. I lost count of how many banks I tried in Bangkok. The help I received in opening the account was definitely not a simple matter. I only have 30 day visas and she had to get a letter from immigration for me and stand guarantor at the bank. If you are an expert on Thai banking law then good for you, the websites seem to disagree with you. I don’t know of many places in the world that would allow a “tourist” to open a bank account.

If you visit the website of the various banks they explain what you require to open an account. Most clearly state you need a non tourist visa. The responses I got from every bank I tried in Bangkok were negative without exception. In the end a friend managed to circumvent the red tape for me at immigration and then at the bank. Some people seem to think it’s easy, in my experience it was definitely not.
