Why is there so much negativity towards expats seeking help with visa issues in Thailand?

This is my first stroll thru this page in quite some time. I started reading the comments and I cannot wrap my head around why anyone feels compelled to sit at their keyboard lecturing people on what they should have done to solve their problems.

First off, how about a having little compassion? Or if you have nothing of value to add to the conversation, maybe just say nothing at all?

Just because your shit is sorted out does not give you the right to be a jackass to anyone. Especially one of the thousands of people who are doing their level best to resolve their problems. People are stranded without warning and are not aware of realistic options. People are afraid, hungry and in need of help and compassion.

And you sit there in your dirty bathrobe and decide it would be a good idea to kick them when they are down? Does it make you feel good to rain shit down on people who are already in it up to their necks?

So, good luck to you down the road, because the wheels of life go around in circles.

Second, unless you know someone's entire story, in intimate detail, how about just shutting the F up? Your condescending BS attitude is not helpful to anyone simply trying to find a workable solution.

Other people, due simply to unfortunate expiration dates on their visas are stuck in a state of limbo. We had our plans, we had what we thought was the proper preparations in place, I personally was all set to receive a work permit... only one problem, my sponsor company has been forced out of business by this ordeal So despite a long list of preparations all of it has flown out the window. And no one can tell me what my options are.

And please if you don;t know me or have inside knowledge of my situation, please keep your opinion in your mouth.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original post expresses frustration over the attitude of some individuals who disparage others seeking help or advice regarding their visa situations in Thailand. The author emphasizes the need for compassion and understanding, particularly given the confusion and difficulties that many expats face during the COVID-19 pandemic. They criticize the tendency of some forum members to lecture others without knowing their specific situations, and call for a more supportive and kind community atmosphere.

Although Mr. Lumley is a bit over the top with his Rant.. I agree with some of his points...People who do little but make disparaging remarks generalizing about nearly all who got caught up in this Lockdown fiasco as greedy TAKERS - you simply do not understand the confusion that went on starting when all the neighboring borders shut down one after another over about a week - ten days or so. IF you had a Visa or Extension in effect at the time that put you in no jeopardy - forcing you to leave Thailand then you have no idea how those series of confusing events turned everything inside - out. In other words if you were not in danger of being negatively affected by the border closings, flight cancelations and denials of entry even to your own home country ... not just in Thailand but the entire region and around the world. Personally I needed to do a Border Bounce to get another 90 days... but in rapid succession Malaysia - then Cambodia, then Laos, then Myanmar closed borders. Then Vietnam locked down. Then Thailand shut totally.

I had my bags packed getting ready to go to any of these places but a last minute check showed each destination shutting down - until all options were gone.

Then the U.S. Embassy dithered forever finally deciding to issue the Covid letter that Thai Immigration used to allow a whoppingly "generous" 30 day Extension in two parts. Then Thai Immigration Dithered even more creating high anxiety with Immigration Office queues 300 people deep. Until finally issuing this so called Amnesty. Again - if all that has happened since January has had no potential effect on you personally - then where do you get the chutzpah to criticize? Some of you guys are like a Single Man of age 54 - Having Never been Married Lecturing a couple with Marriage Advice. How about you just consider toning it down - this ain't your rodeo - you're not riding the bucking horse. Finally if you think the majority of people caught up in this Fiasco are just doing it for the Visa Free Ride - then your discernment is greatly flawed.

Unfortunately, for most people, they think their visa plight is somehow unique to them or a "special case", and 11 times out of 10 it is not :O

There is only a finite of reasons to get IN to thailand, and there is only a specific number of ways to STAY here once you're in. In offering advice to people for many many MANY years I have yet to come across a truly "special or unique case" :/

Most ALL the problems to do with visas/extensions to thailand come down to foreigners not knowing shit for thai when it comes to talking to immigration officers about what they're wanting to do (meaning you have to rely on the half assed translations from your thai significant other, which are most of the time useless)

AND

conversely the totally abysmal grasp of even rudimentary engrish by immigration officers at the 70+ immigration offices scattered around this country :(

Factor in the HUGE sense of "entitlement" or "I contribute to thailand" mindset that most foreigners have here and it's just a receipt for disaster most of the time.

I think you have misinterpreted my message. I was speaking directly to the trolls in this group who make a habit of hurling condescending comments at people who post, asking questions about their Visa situations.

I am talking about the comments that add zero value towards the resolution of the problems as presented in the OP.

The standard answers include, you were too lazy to do it, you're too stupid to do it, you should have left when you had the chance, be thankful you got a few months of free Visa (value? approx $0 as where could you have gone anyway?) if you don't like it leave, and the ever-popular... I was able to square mine away without any problems, so you must be (return to the beginning of this list and repeat).

Imagine If we all went and sat in a room at a visa office talking amongst ourselves, trying to share advice and asking questions of those might have better information or more experience...

And a guy is just walking around the room and looking at your questions. He doesn't ask any clarifying questions. He skims your list of topics and goes. launches into offering more worthless free advice, loudly enough for the entire room to hear. He's puffed up and enjoying giving you a dressing down and his unsolicited advice about what you should have done? (despite 99% of the questions are either "what can I do now or/what should I do in the future.

One of these pious Keyboard Cnts might last 15 minutes before he got a clear warning. Followed 5 min later a warning smack reminder, 3 min later he's out the door on his arse.

I suppose I could have said it all in a single line of familiar advice:

"If you don't have something of value to add to the conversation, don't say anything at all."

I think that my observations meet that requirement.

@Simon *********
. I'm sure there are people who do get arrogant in their replies, but it's more often the case the poster doesn't like the answer they are getting and will turn stroppy. Lots of people insist Thailand is their "home". I've lived here for 12 years, but I cannot call a country "home" where I have to check in every 90 days, where I need a re-entry "permit" to come back in if I leave for any reason, where I can't purchase land, where I need to fill in a form if I'm away from my home address for a few days, where my life is structured around "border bounces" and "visa runs", where I had to maintain dead money in a bank account earning zero interest, and where if I'm married I have to send pictures of my wife and I shaggin in the bedroom and out the front where you can see the house number, and where immigration officials will visit you to make sure that's where you are. That's NOT home, whichever way people spin it, and it's the same for me as everyone else temporarily allowed to stay at the government's discretion. Now what I've said is the truth, but no doubt someone will abuse me for saying it.
