What should I know about making a border run from Thailand, especially regarding transportation and visa issues?

Just done my first ever, and 100% last border run. Never ever ever again! Mini bus full to capacity. Two screaming toddlers, one using a potty, no air-con.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses experiences and challenges faced during border runs in Thailand, particularly highlighting a recent unpleasant mini-bus trip filled to capacity with noisy toddlers. Various comments provide alternative suggestions including using a private car, flying, and taking trains for a more comfortable experience. There's also mention of concerns about re-entry into Thailand after frequent border runs, with suggestions that travelers should consider obtaining a proper visa and the importance of knowing immigration nuances.
Cave *********
You know you can just fly, right? It's like 45 min to Siem Reap, an hour to Vientiane or sub-2h to KL.

Why bother with this nonsense?
Marc **********
Mine was fine.. just work during the trip and think positive
Antoine ********
I did many border runs. Why would someone need an agency to do so?
Antoine ********
ok, that might be true for people who have a reason to worry.
Cris ********
@Antoine *******
for those with weaker passports, it can give them some peace of mind but it’s never a 💯 guarantee. And I see a lot older or solo travelers use agencies as they are not as confident to travel independently.

@Cr**
I have a British passport. I travel the world over “independently”, and I have been “living” in Thailand for 7 years.
Cris ********
@Simon *********
that’s wonderful. I too travel the world independently. I’ve lived in 18 countries and visited another 15+ with no issues on a U.S. Passport. But we are the exception, not the norm.

Many people are scared to travel because of the unknown. Those are the people that feel more comfortable using an agency for a border run. That’s what I was answering for Antoine.

yeah when toddlers can't toddle they scream haha, try doing it all again when you have 2 screaming toddlers with you and you'll look back on this trip as the good old days.
Paul *******
While i agree with your sentiment I would never subject my toddlers to such torture. Responsible parents would fork out for a plane ticket or at least a private car or van with driver, assuming they don't own a car or want to rent a self-drive vehicle.
Will ********
@Paul ******
Well since then I've forked out for plane tickets, driving license, visas, and soon the car, so mine won't be bothering you any time soon, but they'll be plenty of other toddling along for a day of torture that have no choice. Enjoy your headphone shopping.
Raz ********
I did the van thing once in 2016, never again.. Just take a flight next time.
Paul *******
Or take the train to Vientiane. Or drive to the border, either self-drive or with a private van or car and driver.
Raz ********
@Paul ******
There's a direct flight to Vientiane. A bit pricey, but the best alternative is flying to Udon Thani which is super cheap and is located only 1 hour ride from the land border.
Grant ******
I been on one of them vans once many moons ago, never again. I rent a car or fly out now, rather spend a few quid than go through that torture. Squashed up in a van driver thinks he's Hamilton. Constant stops

Why not overnight train to Laos, enjoy the day in Vientiane, night train back. I mean it's easy peasy if you're in Bangkok.
Paul *******
@Bill *****
Indeed, it's a fantastic way of traveling. You arrive in Laos in the early morning, when the first cross border train runs. With a dedicated immigration service, you don't have to queue with potentially dozens of other people like at the nearby land border. Train back leaves late afternoon from Thanaleng station, in time to connect with the Nong Khai-Bangkok service that departs around 8pm.

Go to Vietnam and you'll do border runs every 30 days .. and it's a 10 hour trip 😜
Paul *******
Well, it's only 2 hours from Saigon to the Cambodian border. Done it many times but never as a border run. I only ever cross the border with the intention of going into Cambodia and then back into Thailand. Anyway, to do a border run from Vietnam, you're actually forced to do a visa run, unless you hold a multiple entry visa. This is because it takes the Vietnamese authorities 3 working days to process an e-visa so you can't come straight back. You'll need to leave Vietnam, apply for a new e-visa then wait at least 2 nights in Cambodia to come back.

First class air con buses are the only way to do visa runs bro super comfortable and typically no drama relaxed clean roomy with toilets and rest stops return same day not expensive green line buses depart from bus stations
Paul *******
@Gregg ************
yes best way would be to get on an international bus, preferably to Laos, which has at least 12 cross border routes now. You use the same bus to cross the border and they guide you through the process. Some border crossings might require a visa in advance, now that Laos has scrapped visa on arrival facilities at most of the less busy border crossings.

Other options include the Bangkok-Siem Reap or Bangkok-Phnom Penh buses. Or you could choose a Hat Yai-Kuala Lumpur bus (for those in the south or can fly cheaply to Hat Yai).

Finally, the international train to Thanaleng, Laos (with the Kamsavath station near Vientiane city to open in a few months) is a relatively quick and stress-free way of doing a border run. They have a dedicated immigration service just for train passengers and the train is never full. In fact, the vast majority of passengers are western tourists not local Thais and Laotians, who tend to use either the bus or go by private car.
Gregg *************

Dont think have ever met one that felt ' trapped ',

Cant respond to 'catch-up up ' as no idea what you ref.

Toddlers should be banned from the vans. Just had an unpleasant trip with 3 toddlers. The bus smelt of shit all the way and they made noise non-stop. Coughing all over people and spreading their colds. Parents oblivious to the discomfort they were causing.
Paul *******
@Matthew *******
As a parent myself, I wouldn't Subject my toddler to such misery. I own a car and we drive everywhere. My toddler hasn't even been on the skytrain before.

I don't understand parents who torture their young children like this, going on long uncomfortable journeys with lots of strangers around them. However, I'm understanding and would never whine about them like you are.

I'm guessing you've never had children and please don't have any.
Jason ********
@Matthew *******
wow, so when you were that toddler once upon a time…..the problem and solution are inside you not what happens around you. Hope you helped those toddlers as others helped you at that age. Time to get away from self ……
Paul **********
Why (same-day) border run when you can take a few days to explore the bordering countries.
Paul *******
@Alistair *********
I never understood why some people can't just make a trip out of it and spend a couple of days say in Siem Reap. It's a great town where you'll never get bored even if you've visited 10 times.
Alistair **********
@Paul *********
I never understood these responses, a border run is purely transactional. He wants a new visa / stamp to stay longer in Thailand, no different than going to immigration yet people don't recommend making an "adventure" out of that.
Paul **********
@Alistair *********
I didn't say "Adventure", however I agree, exploring can be an adventure with lifelong memories. Good or bad, just depends on how you deal with each situation.
Paul **********
I don't have time for that, so I can only recommend a border run by plane

I drive to these countries as it's much more fun with my own vehicle. For Vietnam, it's generally not possible to go by car, but if it's just a trip to Saigon you can drive as far as the Cambodian border then it's 2 hours in a nice, comfortable and cheap taxi for the last 80km into town.

However ; go up to Maesalong occassionally and just find the local bus with many stops in small villages fun.

Marc *********
People seem to not understand the whole point, flying in and out of Siem Reap or whatever is easy. Getting denied re-entry is the real problem. Now people will say get the thai elite visa, well that sounds like a real ripoff to be fair. At least the agency has it setup where you don't have to worry about it. Anyone know the shortest distance on a big bus and which company I should go with? Ill be in the same predicament soon enough.
Geoff ********
@Marc ********
Elite....4 sure..bs. Check in 90 days and cannot work..

Price 5 years one person they promote for 5.5 years and give deadline.

Say after this time price goes up..500k to 600k.

The economy was fxxxxxx and yet there trying to rip off the farang here as many scared if visa status. But discourage others from Thailand. ..

Same as per......Want forgien money but don't want us.

Cambodia or Bali or Vietnam I'm thinking...
Marc *********
@Geoff *******
Understood ! im looking at the LTR visa, its like 50 000 baht, only 1 year reporting, its supposed to be 10 years but they really give you 5 and have to re-apply in 5 years assuming you still qualify, aka assuming you grease the right pockets and they dont ditch the visa
Geoff ********
@Marc ********
I would be careful.

I don't believe anything they say as there always changing.

I see No reason why you have to pay any money for this visa. Or report...a dog doesn't have to do this.

After showing assets of 1,000,000 us dollars and the last 2 years income of 80 k per annum.

Reporting for what.

They are driving people away. Slowly but also me. I will consider elsewhere after just 5 years of this mistreatment as far as I'm concerned.

I unwell and came here to relax not have to look over my shoulder and also pay for thus too.

They need to respect the income we contribute what 35% to their economy or more?

Thai statistics say less. I believe not true.

Look awhat covid with no tourist money did.

The economy was crippled

I've heard more people get questioned at airports than land border crossings. That stated, it depends on the border crossing and whether you are doing a border run (in-out same day) or spending a few days outside of Thailand. The latter is almost always trouble free unless you have a long history of visa exempt entries in short succession.
Chris ******
@Marc ********
if you have everything in order and the correct visa then you won't be denied entry ,I've flown in and out endlessly for decades.
Marc *********
What visa ? I get 45 days on arrival? Is there anything bad about that? Can you elaborate?
James **************
@Marc ********
45 fay's then extend by 30 then you hv to do the border run. And not just a turn around....spend a couple days there....then back
Dar *****
@James *************
I did that for around a year, 45 day visa exempt extend for 30 days, border run by air for repeat cycle. worked great until two weeks ago when I was stopped on my way back through SG after being away 4 days. Was let in after checking I had an outbound flight booked ironically 3days later and usual questions. Essentially told to get a visa next time if I want to stay a long time even it’s a tourist visa. Applying for LTR visa now.
Randy ********
Nadia Cristina Vecchione I wish you luck. Hopefully, you won’t need it. Enjoy your time in Cambodia.
Randy ********
Nadia Cristina Vecchione ok. Flying is always the better of the two. You’re less likely to be questioned. But still, they may ask you why you’re not on a proper visa. They may not say a word to you.
Randy ********
Nadia Cristina Vecchione by land? If so, you’re only able to do two land border bounces in a calendar year. Which I don’t think would be your case. Either way, back to back can cause problems. It all comes down to the immigration officer you’re going to face.
Randy ********
Nadia Cristina Vecchione if you haven’t had many stamps in a short period of time. If that’s the case, you’d have no issues returning to Thailand.
Marc *********
Nadia Cristina Vecchione It all depends on the border agent. 10 days is better than 2 days, but then again if you've done 45+30 days, 2 or 3 times you'll run out of luck someday
Randy ********

Border bounce bus heading to Poiphet

@Paul ******
Yes we know that, but it's commonly referred to as Poiphet border in these groups.

Lol, but it's actually Aranyaprathet, since the only cross border buses go all the way to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. If you tell someone at a train or bus station you're heading to Poipet, no one will understand you. The Thai town is called Aranyaprathet. Use the proper name. If that's a mouthful, you can also called it "Aran". Another name used is "Ban Khlong Leuk", referring to the name of the last railway station before the border or "Talad Rong Kluea", which is the name of the border market.

Good for you. I agree with having money sit in a Thai bank account, which is why I do the monthly transfer. I wouldn't transfer the 800k as I get 8% interest tax free in Australia on that amount. I didn't work smart my whole life to be counting every 90 days. Retirement is for having fun

wtf are you on about? You're romanticising a border run. Do you talk about how your trip to immigration is and how you go different routes and throw in the occasional Thai word to immigration officers so they know your a "real traveller"

The first week I moved here, my girlfriend (now wife) took me on a minivan to a different city and on local busses in Bangkok to get around. Then, I found out how much the bts and taxis and flights and private cars cost, and we stopped using minivans and busses.

Enjoy where you live. Fly to Ubon Ratchathani. Hire a car for a few days. Drive out to the Mekong River, visit Pha Taem National Park at 4.00am to see the first sunrays hit Thailand, visit Khong Chiam to see the two-coloured river where the Mun and Mekong meet. Take a few days to enjoy great food and cheap accommodation. Then visit the border market at Chong Mek before walking through the crazy tunnel under the car park into Laos. Have a coffee and pick up some duty free wine before wandering back through the tunnel into Thailand to get a new stamp. Can never understand why people behave like frightened rats scampering to the border and back, instead of savouring many things otherwise missed.
Paul *******
@Roberto ********
just came back from Pakse, crossing at Chong Mek. Process is a bit disorganized on the Lao side as they've moved the immigration and customs process to the new building that has finally been completed. However, only one of the two planned buildings is complete, the other one hasn't started construction. For that, the old building needs to be razed first, meaning both arrivals and departures are done in the same building. A number of steps need to be followed to be stamped out with a car heading back to Thailand, or for that matter, getting into Laos (I entered at Vientiane), but it's not complicated, just a minor annoyance having to shuffle between 4 different booths.

Changing Kip back to Baht is a challenge as the official money changers are either closed, have problems with the system or they're only allowed to exchange foreign currency for Kip.

The Thai side is efficient and straightforward.

I've never walked through the tunnel as I always come by car. However, when I went with friends (Thai and farang) back in 2019, I sent them through the tunnel, while I of course drove my car across. I felt this would be faster for them, but they got confused about where to get stamped so they found me at the booth where I had to get a document stamped for my car and i guided them through the process.
Ben ***********
Made some really good friends when I stayed in khong chiam, everyone is so friendly, the twandang we used to go to was closed and relocated

Mate absolutely. Wat Sirindhorn is a must see as well. And because Ubon is far flung from the Bangkok/Phuket group, it makes common sense to explore the area in conjunction with a border bounce. A buddy of mine went out that way a few years ago, specifically for a bounce, explored the area and ended up finding a lady who would eventually become his wife (so I guess there's some downsides 🤣🤣🤣)

@Dada ***
totally agree, which begs the question, why are the parents such cheap Charlie's? They could have made it much easier on both themselves and their toddlers by using private transportation to get to a border. If they don't own a car (which, if you have children is pretty pathetic, I mean how many families don't own cars??) then at least rent one for these border runs. If not self drive, then a car or van with driver.
Dada ****
@Paul ******
But why can the rest be a cheap Charlie and not families? A family has the right to travel and it cost a lot for families to travel.

If you know you cant stand crying toddler in a PUBLIC bus, perhaps you are the one who should take a private van.🙏

I can agree with you. Its annoying for sure but imagine being these two toddlers and their parents, I dont think it was a walk on a park for them either. I am sure it must have been worse for them…

Now I live 1 hour from Nong khai so I just take the car and park it on thai side of the border.

At the Nong Khai border, there's always some weird, young Vietnamese person who seems to have no idea how to cross the border. One guy asked me for a ride across the bridge, so I obliged. Most recently last week, a Vietnamese women didn't know that she doesn't need a visa for Laos and in any case you would get it on the Lao side of the border not the Thai side.

Laos is the best border to cross. Myanmar is second, mainly because of the one day system the Burmese side employs, so you have no choice but to return to Thailand. The border guards will check to ensure you're eligible before letting you out.
