Can I apply for an ED visa at a Thai embassy in a neighboring country while on an Amnesty tourist visa in Thailand?

Hypothetical question. I am currently on a Amnesty tourist visa. If a land border opens with a neighboring country, i could get another tourist visa (with the maximum of 2 entries per year). But could I visit a Thai embassy in that neighboring country to get my ED visa? I realize you are supposed to go to one in your own country. I ask because I am at Thai immagration and an agent suggested going to Laos (with visa to enter Laos) to go to the embassy. Any respectable responses welcome :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the possibility of applying for an Education (ED) visa at a Thai embassy in a neighboring country while currently on an Amnesty tourist visa in Thailand. While some users believe it's possible under certain conditions such as not needing quarantine, others point out the difficulties including embassy closures and ongoing travel restrictions due to Covid-19. It was noted that obtaining an ED visa can sometimes be done in Thailand, depending on individual circumstances, although many stress adhering to the official immigration procedures and being cautious about varying advice from agents.

Unlikely because you don’t know what the requirements are to actually get back IN to Thailand. So even if borders opened to Laos and you enter the country, get a visa, they could say that you need to provide a negative covid 19 test result before being able to enter Thailand again
Marguyvin **********
Yup. Aside from the covid protocols, the "new normal" will be Thailand will be equally difficult/expensive whether you are coming or going. :/

What they all say is the price is about to go up. It is actually easier and cheaper to fly back to UK and get the Visa if only you could get back into Thailand again. Dont mention the bank account. That is an equally absurd situation.

believe me OF those 20 agencies you contacted I'd bet most of them are sending the passport to the same "real agent" as there are only a handful in the whole country that really push all the paper at the immigration offices.

All the rest just tell you they have connections and then send your passport to the REAL agent that gets the extension (and add a fee on top of what the main one charges)

Just so you're clear ALL in country Non-Immigrant visas of ANY type are for 90 days and cost 2000baht at the immigration office, period end of story

AND

All extensions of stays (no matter how long they're issued for) cost 1900baht.

IF you're paying a school to get you a "special ED visa" and it's more than 2000 baht you're getting a back door under the table one issued.
Nick ************
@Tod ********
this us simply not true and I dint know why you insist on repeating such rubbish. I have been to 2 immigration offices now and neither will allow me 90 day visas and say I must leave the country to get them. Where you get your information from is anyones guess it did you manage it 10 years ago. Things have changed, stop confusing people. END OF!
Tod *********
@Nick ***********
I think you need to STOP replying on visa stuff when you don't know what you're talking about.

You CAN get a 90 day Non-O visa issued INSIDE the country and depending on the office you need between 15 and 21 days left on your current entry stamp from a 30 day visa exempt, a 60 day tourist visa OR a 30 day extension on one of those.

You CANNOT apply for an in country Non-O visa at the immigration office once you go on amnesty :(

Stick with what you know, which is NOT visa stuff :P
David *********
@Tod ********
where is the written proof from immigration of your claim that you can't apply once in amnesty?
Tod *********
@David ********
you need REAL hard stamped days left on your current 30 day visa exempt, 60 day tourist visa or a 30 day extension from one of those to get an in country Non-immigrant visa process because the application goes under consideration between 14 and 20 days depending on the office you apply at.

Amnesty has NO stamp and in fact the stamp IN your passport has expired <- putting you technically on overstay and the only thing that the amnesty is really doing is NOT fining you the 500baht a day for staying past the expiration of your stamp as long as it expired after March 26th.
Nick ************
@Tod ********
so basically you are saying that the immigration officers in two offices dont know their stuff either. You might be right. Anyway I am perfectly happy to admit when I dont know much about a topic and that us why I have been to immigration for information on a number of occssions. It is also why I joined this group but with so many different opinions and distortions of the facts I have not found it very helpful.
David *********

David *********
@Kim *********

Tod *********
@David ********
here's the heading on the paper from Chaengwattana Secion C-1 (the visa issuing section) for getting an in country Non-O based on being over 50 (retirement)

Chiang Mai has the same paper but it says 21 days required not 15 days

AND

seeing as amnesty is technically overstay (because there is NO valid stamp IN your passport letting you be here) you can't apply for an in country Non-O from it :(
Tod *********
@David ********
I'm getting my information from the Chiang Mai immigration office which requires a minimum of 21 stamp days on your current entry stamp AND the main immigration office in Bangkok out at Chaengwattana that requires a minimum of 15 days left on your current valid stamp.
Kim **********

I have just been told the same thing at immigration.
Tod *********
what is it you were told?
Nick ************
@Tod ********
to go to laos for type O Visa while people on here say it can be done in country. 2 immigration offices have said the same now.
Tod *********
Sit tight, wait it out and see what they say amnesty holders need to do.
Tod *********
@Nick ***********
IF you're already on amnesty you can't get a non-O visa issued inside the country, you would have needed to do that BEFORE your current stamp ran out.

AND

As things are now, you're not getting in to Lao to get a Non-O visa OR getting back into thailand right now either.
Sid *******
If you are on an expired tourist visa schools for a limited time can process the Ed Visa in Thailand. They have to be approved before the amnesty is up so you may be a little late now as my previous school informed me in an email mid June that it can take from 4 to 6 weeks for the application to be approved. They said at the time if this is something you’re interested in do it now. You can always talk to an approved school and see what they say.
Tod *********
sounds like an "under the table" "back door" visa issued seeing as no immigration offices I know of can get a Non-Imm visa issued while you're on amnesty (which really means you REAL stamp to stay here expired already).
Sid *******
@Tod ********
This was from a very reputable school in Chiang Mai. I also saw somewhere else that immigration where making special concessions for Ed Visas for a very limited time .
Tod *********
@Sid ******
and what pray tell is the cost of the 90 day in country Non-ED visa from that very reputable school?

Unless I'm mistaken I think they're saying it's 15K baht (and as I pointed out the actual VISA really costs 2000 at the immigration office).

I did not say the stamps weren't real, just that they are gotten via 'other means'...
Sid *******
@Tod ********
I guess whatever the cost of the visa is and of course add on the cost of your schooling for the next six months or 12 . It’s what ever option you prefer. It is an Ed VISA and that means you have to attend class three times a week. The cost of the Class was not over inflated. It was just their regular fee.
Tod *********
@Sid ******
right, the class costs look to be in line with the other schools BUT their "visa special fee" costs seem outta whack

How would you get back into Thailand if you go to Laos? I thought only people with work permits and diplomats etc were allowed to enter the kingdom at the moment.
Marcus **********
@Simon *********
students are allowed in now.
Tod *********
@Marc *********
and again you post bad info. Students are not "allowed in now" students can APPLY at the thai consulate in the country they're in for a Certificate of Entry (which comes from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office here in Bangkok), they need to have booked the 14 day stay in the Alternative State Quarantine facility, they need to have 100K US dollars of covid specific insurance, they need to have a negative covid test and a fit to fly certificate.

The country did NOT just open the doors to students :( They follow the exact same procedure that people who have work permits, are married to thais, or have half thai children do to get back in

Let's get the terminology correct right from the start. You didn't come in on a '30 days visa' because there is no such thing. You are British so you came in on a 30 day visa *exemption*. See chart.

It's called an exemption for a reason. Citizens of numerous countries are eligible for that if their stay is for 30 days or less. It's to negate people having to apply for a full 60 day tourist visa from a consulate or embassy outside Thailand.

Looks like you'll need to go back to the UK to apply, depending on what visa you want. When you get back, call the Hull consulate, who are the most helpful and friendly of all.

2 points, entering the country without a visa is NOT a visa, it's a visa exempt entry. Yes, most nationalities get 2 visa exempt entries by land per calender year.

ED visas can be obtained at a Thai embassy in any country, as can most visas. Only the Non-OA, visas for certain nationalities (Indians, Chinese, ext) and certain treaty related non-Bs have to be obtained in your home country.
David *********

there are some nationalities that need to return to home country to get an ed visa.
