Yesterday, as I went to top off my Rabbit card - the attendant asked to see my passport. Told them I don’t carry it with me but, I had a photo of it on my phone. They went to scan it but, their reader didn’t work for some reason. No top-off for me! 😕

Why dont the banks / goverment allow people on tourist visas to open highly limited bank accounts that could be a win win. E.G limit transfer amounts in / out monthly. Limit transfers to foreign accounts etc that way day to day spening is possible but business / work isn't.

I don't know about you guys but I would be happy with a bank account with a tiny limit such as 1,000 baht per month all my large spending can be on credit card and my small day to day stuff on my thai account.

This limit would stop people running businesses or getting paid through their thai bank accounts but allow legitimate tourists to use the bank account

Had a Bangkok bank account for 2 years. Opened through an agent. This weekend they limited access to my account and told me to come in. Manager says they dont approve DTV’s and are closing all accounts not on long term visas. They are slowly going through all foreign accounts …..

I opened a Bangkok Bank account by DTV. Currently the account has been locked for 2 weeks without a due date. Does anyone in the group know a lawyer to go with me to the bank to request a refund or sue? A few million baht. Leave a comment and I will dm you. Thanks

Bangkok Bank update:

I have had this account for several years, initially opened on a tourist visa.

Because of all the confusion about accounts getting closed I visited the local branch today for peace of mind.

They said no problem with older accounts.

For these they look at cash flow to prevent money laundering…Large amount of money in and then out again.

Regular monthly deposits and bills paid online are normal and proper use of the account.

They are contacting people by email if there account issues.

USA passport on DTV visa. Account in Chiang Mai. 5 June 2025.

I hope this helps…..I was really freaked out with all the news of BB accounts getting closed.

I am not understanding the dilemma with Thai bank accounts. It appears that you need a Visa before you can get a bank account and you need a bank account before you can get a Visa??

And that the only way to solve this is through a Visa agent??

I am aware that I am a guest in this country and they make the rules but I can’t understand why a bank would not take your money. Is there some history of fraud that made them wary of foreigners opening bank accounts?
