I never had a problem. I have had it happen twice, went in with the wife and recovered it.

You should be able to get your card back from the bank that owns the ATM. It's quite easy to do, just go in with I D and proof i.e. time and date you lost it. I usually keep photographs of my cards in my phone to aid in such situations
