you don't, you can renew 180 days at Thai immigration for 1900 thb. Yes, you have to go out then back in after one year, but the 180 days resets again, and you can renew that 180 days in Thailand, and so on for the 5 years. There is a video on YouTube where the minister of foreign affairs explains all the misconceptions.

Me too, and if travel restrictions haven't been lifted as we approach 31st July, then I will try for a 60 day extension as close to that date as possible. Thanks for your help and reassurance. Keep safe

Should the borders not be reopened by then, I guess applying for a 60 day extension before the 31st July could be an option.
