Yeah , you situation is close to exactly the same as myself . Obviously there are benefits for both Australia and those of us in this situation , basically holding Australian assets .

If they eventually pass that legislation that was proposed and had bipartisan support anyhow it would not concern me at all , because you get people confusing the 180 days with " Australian resident for tax purposes " two different things

An apple v orange .

You do actually , I have an approved ATO ruling as Australian resident for tax purposes , they'd be silly not to , as it's where the income is derived , I do 3 x tax returns per year , and have a couple of houses , neither of which I reside in .

I'm a very obvious example and frankly much better for Australia as I continue to pay medicare and private health insurance .

No doubt about my tax status and if has NOTHING to do with where you choose to live , it would be cheaper for me to try and ditch the status . I choose not to .

If this were to become a topic again , and I don't think it will shorterm , but understand now any legislation can be just pushed though , frankly that was not good , hence why understanding the voting system is very important .

The bipartisan position was around indexation overseas , so assuming all stays same , it will require a minimum of 45 days in Auss every 3 years , basically to keep your indexation , UK for example loose indexation of leaving UK .

So there is little doubt that there is mood for change , but this time legislation would not be held up . So let's wait and see .

Because here it is all on region , I suppose he could close one but I'd assume he has moved and when you withdraw outside the region it charges you , and he wanted local one for current retirement Visa , this would be why I'd assume .. practical.

Gary , appreciate the issue , I love cats too , but you need to get them placed somewhere there , de sexed or not the last thing this country needs is 13 more .

Plus where would you possibly live ? You'd be in breach virtually everywhere .

Volunteering here will not be an issue .

Pretty simple is a word ..DONT ! and NEVER even consider offering same , make it 100 % clear , or this will just be the beginning of doom .

This would be a very expensive option when you considered all charges and with a foreign card , 7/ 11 - 15 baht ( I know this is not what the OP wants ) .
