How can I import my 13 cats to Thailand for retirement while ensuring their safety and finding suitable accommodation?

Okay folks, strange question. I have 13 cats, live in America and want to retire there on retirement visa. I have a lot of time in Thailand, studied the language at a Thai temple in USA and love it there. I am 56, high income/assts, so no issues with getting the visa. The issue is my cats that I will not separate from. I do animal rescue and will be doing this until I die. The cats are all spayed/neutered, and just domestic breeds I rescued from death row at shelters, found on the street hurt, et cetera. Thank you in advance, Gary

TLDR : Answer Summary
Gary, an expat planning to retire in Thailand, seeks advice on bringing his 13 rescued cats, addressing concerns about pet importation logistics and finding suitable housing. He expresses love for Thailand, mentioning his high income and experience in animal rescue, and stresses that he won't separate from his cats. Community responses highlight potential difficulties in finding pet-friendly accommodations and the complexities involved in transporting multiple pets, including paperwork and airline regulations. Suggestions include using pet transport services and emphasizing the need for proper documentation. Overall, while many readers are supportive of his mission, they raise concerns regarding the feasibility of such a move with so many animals.

They're cats

Go live your life there's too many of them anyways
Terary **********
If you "rescued" them, aren't they already rescued? You're job is done? Find the cats a home. What you can adopt-away, bring with you, I guess. There are plenty animals here to rescue, so you don't have to worry about that. I don't mean to be a dick but I suspect of your 13 cats, most wont really care if it's you that feeds them or so other American household. Hence, you're really just dragging the cats here, for your benefit not theirs.

You are really an ignorant individual lacking intellectual capacity and or observational skills. You give foreigners a bad name with your overt poor attitude. You exude a lack of any compassion for animals and combined with your miserable posting, I wonder why the admins let you post as there is nothing you have posted positive. You fail to grasp even the most elementary concepts for observational skills, and logic eludes you failing to see many details in my replies yet you continue with your condescending wanton antagonistic remarks.

I am in Udon often, if you had one little ounce of sense my profile photo is me with the Royal Thai Police in Udon as I volunteered and helped with a myriad of issues from technology on down and am friends with many. You're a special type of stupid and have no idea who I am, that's amusingly clear and word to the wise be careful how you tread out of the US as things can catch up to you. I've seen a lot of things in Thailand the the loudest people find out and not if, but when. Who knows, you might but be your real name or photo, I don't care at this point, but Udon is a small place in our out of the city so maybe THINK before you post as you might cross the wrong person someday and I hope you don't. That would not be me, I really don't have the desire to hurt anyone for internet trolling, but the world can be an evil place and working with the PD in Thailand, I have seen many things happen like this.

Just do what you want to do.

I would say rent a house local, as you need to make sure you like the area. You can build whenever you want. And if you have money, and some is disposable then do what you want. Also if you have lots of money just buy 5, 10 or 15 years with long term visa cant remember what its called elite , privalage something like that . You pay money and stay without restrictions like us on other visas and you get perks and discounts . Cost about 20k pounds i think google it.

But you can live with the cats here, especialy as miney talks

I have seen at least one "visa agent for pets" so if you want help with the paperwork, look around for that. Your case is special but foreigners bring a dog or cat all the time. If as some are saying there is a two-pet limit per flight then it sounds like you just need to pay people to fly your cats over, or trade favors, it shouldn't be any problem besides the logistics. Get a student to fly them over and you pick them up at the airport, you can probably do that for the cost of the ticket.

On an upbeat note to counter some of the negativity -- I think a house full of cats, especially if it's outside the big city, will go down well here. It could be a real ice-breaker and probably help you make friends. Thais love cats and dogs, and like to take care of them.

You should start a YouTube channel!

Thanks Kevin and very nice post. I have been on Youtube for over a decade and last I looked I think 5M views, but subs was like 1.2 or 1.3K or something. I do not accept donations so only some animals stuff is on there, usually it is in random countries or me fooling around with my cars. I think I only have 1 from Germany and I grew up as a child with German from my grossmutter teaching us and I can still get by with some basics to get around.

I think the transport route I can do bulk, certainly double the cost I assume, but anyhow appreciate your kind words. I have property to build that I have free reign on as I have many friends in Thailand and even a home to be gifted to me if I want, but I will build my own. Danke Sehr!

Yeah - unless your seriously wealthy your not coming to Thailand - 13 cats is probably 20 grand USA funds then the Thai government is not going to allow you to come because having 13 cats that you cannot live without means your a crazy person and Thailand has enough of those already
Gary ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Brian ********
If you think 20K is a lot and associate that with crazy wealthy, perhaps you should post less dribble and work on your income in your life. Then you go onto your arrogant condescension that I am crazy for helping animals? I gave away over $1 million US to animals and very proud of my work in many countries. Some of that work was set up working with the Thai government even giving me space to run animal clinics. Instead of pontificating gratuitous unwarranted comments, embrace the fact that there are people that are committed to their animals as well as helping animals. It's clear that one can really judge people how they treat animals and you should reflect as any person that would leave their animals behind needs to do some serious introspection.

Gary , appreciate the issue , I love cats too , but you need to get them placed somewhere there , de sexed or not the last thing this country needs is 13 more .

Some of these people have no clue what they're talking about. Sure .. you would have an issue finding a rental in a tourist area, but not in smaller towns like where we live. We had 13 animals (now 11), and have been here for 9 years.

Many landlords don't want animals, but many are perfectly fine with it. We also volunteer with a TNR foundation locally. Life is good.

I won't name where exactly we live on this forum, because we don't want more people here, but animal lovers are an exception in my mind. PM for location.

Instead all types of animal haters, people haters, the people that give expats a bad name with blocked profiles with snarky remarks. If the main question is about getting them here, the main issue, even in cargo is the number of pets permitted on a flight.

It looks like you have everything else covered in the comments.

I brought 6 pets with me. The paperwork and everything else was a PITA to do, and also used a pet agent both sides. As money isn’t an issue, I would say this is a must.

You can also find pages for Flight volunteers (I do this) where you find someone flying the route to be your pet companion. Most do this for free… I suspect you will struggle to get all on one flight, but this would save you going back and forth. Feel free to PM.

My Thai friend has fourteen chihuahuas and a British bulldog, but he has a large gated and walled village type house, so the dogs can't get out to mix with soi dogs. With cats unless you kept them in a very large fencing type of secure area then for sure you'd have a big problem with kittens, plus there is rabies in Thailand, but how prevalent it is, is an unknown.

Hi Gary,

I run an animal shelter, mainly for cats, as well as the occasional street dog that I can treat here, with Soi Dog Foundation helping out with the more difficult cases.

Bringing your cats here is not an issue but, in order to organise all requirements - pet travel passports, microchips, other relevant tests, plus certificates of export from the US and subsequent import into Thailand - it would be best to do this via a pet travel company, as it will be fairly time consuming and having someone this end that has the experience, will make it a lot easier and more comfortable for them.

I can DM you relevant details as I have done this in reverse from Thailand to other countries for rescues here.

If flying into Bangkok, there is also pet friendly accommodation available, if needed on arrival.

As you are already well-organised with long-term accommodation, it is just a case of ensuring you have all the correct documentation needed.

Are they indoor or outdoor cats?

Getting a large catio built for outdoor use, which can be dismantled and moved once your permanent housing is ready, may help and afford protection to them. The percentage of strays who have FeLV or FiV is fairly high here.

Feel free to DM me.

Thank you! I am about 12 months or less out on this. My home is not yet started on the build and will not unless I know I can line everything up. These are strictly indoor cats, really living the life. My US vet is a USDA vet and my friend, so I get the shots, microchip and paperwork <sigh>. I know it will be a PITA and I will have my place lined up before I move them. I usually do TNVR but I find myself doing all types of work there and with dogs too. My girl is in Philippines as I have a place there, and we have 3 cats there too that will join us. I have contacts in BKK that can help possibly with any government issues as I volunteered with the Thai police on the technology end previously but I hate to ask for favors and would prefer to do things the proper way. Gary , the problem you will face is getting the import paperwork for your cats. Transporting them would be quite expensive. My recommendation is to reach out to pet transport or pet relocation. I am pretty sure they is a way to do it . Are you planning on building your home in Udon first prior to bringing your rescues here ? I would suggest you do so not to get them to stress from going from one place to another. It will be stressful as it is for them to travel.

Probably will take some time at least you can do it 2 cats at a time per required by airlines per person. If money wasn’t a problem charger a plane ✈️. Good luck to you and keep us posted I would love to know.
Gary ***********

Yes, build first. I have a family house there now, but small I can use, but I would never put my cats there. I know this is going to be like 50K or whatever it is, I get it. The cats per airline traveling rule is 2 or 3 depending, but you can ship the lot pout using a pet courier I believe, but with a retirement visa, I simply don't know and why I posted. You make great points with the stress, totally agree and my friend is a Thai engineer who will inspect as it is built. I don't know how much it would be to charter a plane, my guess is many hundreds of thousands minimum and I would do it is I had to, but I think there is another way. Importing them to Thailand you’d need the permit, it’s not a problem. The problems will be transporting them as per airline’s policy it’s only 2 pets passengers per flight. That’s meant you’d need multiple flights/trips.

In cabin pets also subjected to weight restrictions. Be sure your fur babies are not over weight!🤭🐶

By the way - the cat rescue in Thailand is quite different than in the US. There are a lot of community cats that people feed and take care of. Walking from our apartment we usually see 10-20 of them that are all well fed and very friendly.

There are nonprofits that help care for them but generally they intervene if one is critically ill or injured, and after treatment the cat or dog will usually be put back. But most people are so kind to the animals that they seem to live higher quality lives than they would in a US type shelter system.

Just wanted to put that out there!

That's so sad. Mine are indoor only cats and that extends their life expectancy so much. I just found a cat a few weeks ago in Udon, at first I thought laying there, maybe needed water, but the cat ended up dying even after I took it quickly to the vet. Maybe poison or some pathogen, but life for an outside cat is very hard. Thank you for trying Charles-we are often the last home for these animals.
Andy **********
No matter how rich you are, it's possible somebof your cats will die or suffer during air transport. Unless you have your own private jet. I know they are street moggies, but they will also be exposed to novel pathogens in Thailand. If you won't remove the cats and are concerned fir their welfare, moving to a developing country might not be a good move for them. Put their needs first, not yours.

Rare but not impossible. Suffering less rare. Bangkok alone sees 30,000 home invasions by snakes, with cat eating pythons being the major problem. They get in via toilets. Ditto to mice and rats when it rains. I consider confining 13 cats indoors for life an act of cruelty. Properties available to Farang tend to be small. Still, must be worth it to move to a country where you have very few rights.
Gary ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Andy Thompson I have seen the snakes come through the toilet in my family home in Udon, they have nothing to prevent it. My cats live in an 8000 square foot home, roughly 800sq meters. I am building something a little bigger in Thailand. If that's cruel, I think we can find a lot of people to move in 555. I've been to 26 countries in my life, honestly Thailand is my #1 country next the America to live. I love the language and most importantly the people and it is a great fit for me. I never had any issues in Thailand, but then again I am helping animals most of the time or riding my bike not doing "bad foreigner stuff" in red light areas or the like.

You will never get a place here to stay with cats like that

As long as he rents in a non tourist area, and get approval up front, it should be no problem. We live in a small Thai town with our 11 animals. We had 13 for a long time, but lost 2 last year. One to illness, and the other from a cobra bite.
Chuck **********
@Deanna ******
the snakes here love cats!
Lauren *****
@Deanna ******
a cobra bite omg I'm so sorry.
Deanna *******
@Lauren ****
thank you. It was brutal for sure. She was a snake hunter. She could smell them from a mile away, and would seek them out. She killed 7 cobras in her lifetime (we tried everything to keep them out of our gardens). We knew the snake would eventually win, but still so incredibly heart wrenching.

We adopted her when she was a tiny puppy and had her for 8 years. RIP Tuk Tuk.

Not to brag, not my intent. I am worth millions as a founder of a technology company and invested and just started different business in 3 countries. When I divorced, my X wanted zero, absolutely zero money from me. There are good people in this world and her and her family have been better to me than my own family in my life. I hear all this stuff on the internet about K-1 visa, girls ripped the guy off, et cetera but in my case the opposite story. No prenup, nothing. I keep my big bike at the family home, they offered to give it to me, but I do not want the home as I want a big place. There are good stories out there, but many people do not share them. I am only sharing that to you as your last statement "just trying to help you" I believe is sincere.

I will build, no issues and have the land already to build on. The issue is importing the cats I need help with.

Your ex-wife can ask you any time because you do not own the land. Be smart I’ve lived here many years now, and I know the way around.

be ware of getting to pay extr@, non tax at the import area for pets.
Gregor **********
you should check "pet travel Thailand" before, as it might cost you 3000 US Dollars per cat to get them to Thailand
Steve ********
@Gregor *********
that’s completely false
Gregor **********
@Steve *******
just wait and learn
Janin ******
@Gregor *********
, depends on how and who does it. Our animals (we did everything ourselves)was 200 euro each with KLM. But if you take a specialised organisation it will cost more, a lot more!
Steve ********
@Gregor *********
been there, done that. Learned already.
Ben **********
@Steve *******
your information is false actually, just get a good pet relocation agent and they deal with it all for you import certificate guaranteed, and quite cheap if you actually care about your animals, import 7 already at once no issues
Steve ********
@Ben *********
that literally doesn’t make my information (which is correct) false.

I am good as needed, I figured it would be at least $1000 per cat. The issue is can I get a permit for this small zoo?
Steve ********
@Gary **********
message the livestock bureau here. That’s who you have to deal with. I believe the answer will be NO!
Janin ******
@Steve *******
, not correct! If all your papers are in order, he can bring them in.
Steve ********
@Janin *****
did you bring 10 pets to Thailand? I know a couple that tried to bring 4 dogs and were denied. So there’s that.
Janin ******
@Steve *******
, if they got denied it means something wasn’t right about their animals. I bring my cat and dog and friends who came here for 4 years brought their 4 cats and 4 dogs…no problem,

I briefly asked the man at the airport in BKK and he said cats were not an issue. His English was non existent and my Thai is maybe 5000 usable words, but he also said no quarantine for them. The answer I want to solidly it, as I have a lot on the line if I am building a home there which I want to start shortly.
Steve ********
@Gary **********
well, you know how it is here. A “no” from person and a “yes” from another. The import certificate is good for 60 days. I would apply for that first. Then you’ll have your answer. So: microchipped, international health certificate, and import document. It’s a very stressful process. Any delay with your flight and you’re screwed. Again, I don’t envy you.

I think it is emailed the Animal Quarantine Station (AQS) if I am reading correctly. I do not see a limit on the number and while unusual for sure, I can see where they might have some questions as if I was a breeder.
Steve ********
@Gary **********
I dealt with the livestock authority when I brought my 2 dogs. I’m assuming they are all “chipped”. International health certificate on all of them. Which is good for only 10 days (9

). It’s also expensive. I sure don’t envy you!

hi Gary I recently moved 7 animals Australia to Thailand. Will cost you around 1k usd for each cat your right with that, and I would recommend using a pet travel agent to do the whole lot it will be a lot easier for you and would fit into the 1k budget per cat, if you did it yourself it will be cheaper! If you need any help feel free to PM me, and thanks for being a good human and not willing to seperate your cats like most others would 🙏🏽

Please bring the 13 cat Thailand too 😊

I doubt you'll be able to find an apartment or condo that will let you have that many cats, but you might be able to find a house to rent that will let you do whatever you want with pets. Just be warned that if you're a bleeding heart for animals, you're likely to quickly increase the number of pets/cats that you have due to the large number of them on the streets here.

Got a place to be build lined up big enough as I had it through marriage and my X and family and I are super close, no issues building on it. Adopt more, that's the plan, get more of them hehe. I mainly do TNVR, but I do rescue in Philippines, US, Brazil and Thailand. I TRY not to take them home, but sometimes GOD has a different plan for me.

No bad stories to tell on that regard, we are extremely good friends and her family is still my family. I am planning on building a large home on the family land.

This is a visa forum, perhaps refer to "Thailand Visa Advice | DTV | Retirement & More" Why do you feel the need to post, to just watch your gratuitous condescension? That is a question you should be asking yourself.
