in 2014, I attempted to contact the Thai embassy in Quito to obtain any type of visa. They were always either closed or official was out of the office. Never answered phone calls. I ran out of time and obtained a 30 day visa exemption in BKK. Then obtained a student visa, requiring me to leave Thailand then re-enter.

I think all visas require a border run to obtain if you have a 30 day visa exemption, not sure. Others in this group are more expert.

My point, best to arrive with a visa, if that can’t happen, then there are other solutions.

I am not the expert but, if you arrive with no visa you get a 30 day visa exemption. Get to the Chiang Mai Immigration office near the airport as quickly as you can to find out which type of visa works best for you and the process to make it happen. There are some time limitations before you apply for your resident visa, once the visa application is made you are good to stay until complete.

If you want more time flexibility, obtain a tourist visa from your home country before entering Thailand.

The Chiang Mai Immigration office is very helpful in answering your questions, when you visit.

Go to the Chiang Mai immigration office near the airport. They are very helpful and will tell you exactly what you need to do. Also, they have the latest information on visa requirements changes.

It’s too easy when you live this close to the office.

Similar, you can leave, unlike Ecuador. But you must be sure you have a multi entry visa and a re-entry stamp at the airport.

Go for the 6 month tourist visa. Have fun catching anyone at the Thai Consulate in Quito.

If you decide to stay longer go for the retirement visa, it takes a few months to obtain that. I received just before I left and since expired. When we move back in the future I will do the same again. In the mean time, on my brief visits the tourist visa exemption works fine.

Like Ecuador, check it out before deciding to set up a more permanent home. You might decide to float amongst other Asian countries first. Keep your options open.

Just my thoughts.
