It depends on the airline. It's them who ask. Thai immigration don't, normally. However, you need to show return or onward travel to get your TR60 visa.

Get an extension. Will save you money, and overstay stamp in your passport plus if the police stop you in those 5 days, jail & deportation.

 as long as you have return ticket booked, you should be fine. Just say you will get visa extension when you're in Thailand, if asked.
