Go walk around, say hello to neighbours. Ask if the place is noisy etc. Neighbors will usually know if the house is for rent or sale or what have happened there. Some will even know the owner.

You can go anytime before your visa is up. But avoid mon & fri, cos it will be jam packed with people. Bring a blue pen, a passport size photo. And it take a few hours on average.
