From Chiang mai you can border bounce from Mai Sai, but bring 10 USD for Myanmar temporary permit.

Or if you really want to go to Laos you can go to Chiang Rai and take slow boat to Luang Prabang

Get yourself to an immigration office asap and apply for an extension.

You have to pay for the extension plus fine. But you do not get an overstay stamp on.

Air into Thailand is the best. They are trying to attract a certain type of tourist while making it harder for those they don't want.

To do that you have to enter Malaysia with your Australian passport. Also as a multiple citizenship holder you can collect visa exempt stamps in both passports.

And another thing in mind the Lao visa is cheaper for Australian passport holders
