GREAT post and reflects my experiences in Thailand.

Like you I cycle a lot there and the people are amazingly friendly.

We 'chat' about where I'm from, where I'm going, they admire my bike.

They want to know how much it costs (no, they don't have thoughts of stealing it).

I'm going back in three weeks and can't wait.

Oliver, do you have the ride to Chiang Mai on Strava.

I'm considering a 'road trip from the Khon Kaen area going north, maybe up to Chiang Mai or Nong Khai and then in to Laos.

I have never been treated with anything other than the utmost respect from Thai people. Not once have I encountered any problems. Thai's treat me the same as I treat them ans as i treat people the world over.

On the Thai Visa website it mentions 'Spouse/children of a Thai national' in order to apply for a non-O visa!

My partner of 4 years is Thai, she has 2 children, one 16, one 30 from a previous marriage.

I have never applied for a non-O visa as I assume that I do not qualify!

As you can see I'm not that clued up on visas! I visit every year for
***
months and thought the retirement visa might be a better option than getting a 60 day tourist and then two 30 days.

Three trips to Thailand, 2 stints in hospital, one with food poisoning, the other dehydration. Insured on both occasions and treated like Royalty in hospitals that are like 5* hotels. I wouldn't travel anywhere without it, but make sure that you disclose all pre-existing conditions, they will do anything to get out of paying.

And make sure if you can that you or the hospital contact your insurers as soon as you are admitted to hospital to make them aware.

I got a certificate of residence from immigration, took it to Bangkok bank. Easy as that,.
