Hi everyone

I’m currently applying for the DTV and trying to clarify driving regulations in Thailand.

As I don’t have the possibility to obtain an International Driving Permit from my home country in the short term, I started researching legal alternatives and found online references (including Wikipedia) about possible recognition of ASEAN driving licenses, specifically the Indonesian SIM.

I’m looking for real, first-hand experiences only:

– has anyone actually driven in Thailand with an Indonesian SIM?

– was it accepted during police checks or in case of an accident?

– from an insurance perspective, was it considered valid?

My goal is to stay fully legal and insured, not to rely on “it usually works”.

If you have concrete cases or official confirmations, I’d really appreciate your input 🙏

Thanks!

Sharing as some people said you can’t get it unless you’ve done your first 90 day report.

This is my second visit in Thailand with my DTV, this time I’ve been here for 1 month, obtained my temp resident certificate 3 weeks ago which was needed to apply for this.

Managed to get my Thai Car and Bike licence today converted over from my UK. Note I don’t have a full bike licence for my UK licence but I do have a current CBT certificate which allows me to ride a 125cc where as my UK licence only allows a 50cc, not sure if that made a difference.

Apart from all the required paper work, I had to watch a 1 hour video and answer 4 questions at the end which were also asked during the video randomly.

The physical test if you can call it that was interesting to say the least lol and involved pressing the red/yellow/green button several times when the corresponding traffic light changed, and some make sift accelerate and stop peddles when the light changed on the second test.

I know, I'm sorry but I have 2 Qs in one day 🤷🏽

I'm diagnosed with Obstructive Speep Apnea and was prescribed to use a C-PAP mask every night. I was required to report this to the UK driving licensing authority, and give an undertaking to use the mask as prescribed. On this basis there were no concerns about me continuing to hold a licence and drive, over a period of more than 15 years now.

Does anyone have experience of reporting OSA on the medical cert when applying for a Thai driving licence? What was the outcome, please?

Thanks.

So what happens when you love in Thailand long term without returning to your native country- say retirement or marriage status- and then go back to visit? Do you get an international driving permit from Thailand?
