Has anyone with an A2 motorcycle licence successfully converted it to a Thai motorcycle licence? I’m having issues.
Answer summary
Converting an A2 motorcycle license to a Thai motorcycle license can pose some challenges. Many expats have reported success when they have an International Driving Permit (IDP) that includes motorcycle endorsements. Generally, holding an IDP can simplify the conversion process, allowing bypassing some tests, although requirements can vary based on the local Department of Land Transport office. Comments indicate that experiences differ widely, with some needing just an eye test and paperwork, while others were required to take both a written and practical driving test. It's advisable to check with the local DLT for specific requirements and ensure your documents are in order.

At what point can you purchase a car? I have a UK drivers licence and the IDP 1968 that I belive lasts for three years. Thanks in advance for your replies. Looking forward to arriving in Thailand at the end of September.

Why not just go to the license office here in Thailand? I did the whole process from scratch for a car and m/c. It is simple an easy.

Oh yes everything is so easy in Thailand until it isn’t.

That’s why there are so many go “fund me” accounts because people don’t have the correct license and don’t realize their insurance company won’t cover them (if they have insurance that is)

Just like most of the comments here, I converted my license and got both car and motorcycle license. Your only option is to take the written and practical tests. In Chiang Rai, you have to book your schedule online.

In 25 yrs here I have never known a conversion unless you do it illegally through an agent.

Just get a medical cert., then go and get a licence legally. Easy!

Thais do it .

If the bike part is stamped on your IDP then they'll convert it, they don't have any idea about the licence classes in other countries just what has been stamped on your IDP in your home country.

I have full car and provisional bike licences in the UK, my IDP stamped both, I got both converted in Buriram so have a full bike and full car licence for Thailand 😉

Fun fact, I can use my Thai bike licence to ride big bikes in the UK legally for a year before needing to take the UK test 🤣
Steve ******
Steve ******
Ben Serge you can indeed but I'd be genuinely interested to know if you could find insurance cover to ride legally or a hire company that would rent you a bike.
Ben *******
Ben *******
Steve Nice I take it you mean in the UK?

Heathrow car rentals take a Thai driving licence but that's for cars, I know it's not a bike ;)

As for the bike insurance, as I said, I think it would be very hard to find, not impossible, but it would be very expensive, it would probably be quicker and cheaper to take the UK bike test 🤣

I wouldn't want or need to personally, I've lived here for 20 years with no intention of moving back to the UK and even if I did it's too cold for bikes (for me) apart from the odd heatwave that lasts a few days, I've got a full UK driving licence and can legally drive most things, even little 125cc scooters with L plates attached ;)
Christopher ******
Christopher ******
Ben Serge So you only have a UK provisional motorcycle licence ( upto 125cc ) but you’ve used it to get a Thai motorcycle licence to ride big bikes in Thailand…you need a lot of experience to ride a bigbike in Thailand & even then it’s still risky, just hope you won’t be starting a “ Go Fund Me”
Ben *******
Ben *******
Christopher Pack Who do you think you're talking to?

You don't know me so don't make assumptions and maybe stay off your high horse ;)

For your information, I don't ride bikes in Thailand or anywhere else unless I jump on my wife's scooter and go to the village shop, I've lived here for twenty years, I used to rent scooters when I visited for a few weeks at a time but when I moved here I bought a car and haven't looked back.

In those twenty years I have had ONE accident, touch wood, and even that wasn't an accident as such, I'd just picked up a new pickup from Isuzu, stopped at a red light a few hundred metres away and some old man decided he'd scrape down the side with his Saleng, insurance paid to fix it and Isuzu fucked it up but that's a whole different story ;)

I was a bit of a scally in my youth so just because I don't have a big big licence it doesn't mean I can't ride one safely :)

Anyway, my post wasn't advising anyone to ride a big bike, the original post asked about getting a Thai bike licence and I shared my experience, the fun fact was just that, at the end of the day although it would be a legal licence in the UK for a year BUT that doesn't mean anyone could ride a big bike there legally, insurance is mandatory and as I said it would be very hard and/or very expensive to get insurance with a Thai bike licence in the UK.

As I said above, get off your high horse and don't make assumptions, you have no right to try and tell people what they can or can't do and I hope you never find yourself in a position where you need advice or help from others and they come back with a response like "I hope you won't need to set up a Go Fund Me"!

You're a muppet and should really keep those stupid opinions you have to yourself 🤣
Thorsten ***********
Thorsten ***********
Ben Serge only if you not live anymore in the UK and don't have a adress there!
Ben *******
Ben *******
Thorsten Massinger Not entirely true but I'm sure you know better as an obviously fellow Brit/English person 🤣
Peter *********
Peter *********
Is that each time you go back you get 1 year or just in your first return back
Ben *******
Ben *******
Peter Stevens That's just for the first year, you can take the UK test at anytime throughout the year but the Thai licence is not usable after the year is up 😉

The only real issue is the insurance, I reckon it would cost a lot more to insure a big bike on a Thai licence and I'm sure most insurance companies would refuse to insure you with it anyway.

You can't convert licences in the UK the same way as here, everyone needs to take the tests 🙂

None of this affects me as I have no intention of returning to live in the UK but it may be a possibility and helpful for some, the same rules apply to a car licence as well, you can drive for a year before needing to take the tests so basically learn as you go, much the same as in Thailand 🤣

CaringPelican7510 can I just say I have both bike and car license’s transferred from my idp. When I passed my big bike test I was given a word of advise from my instructor “ always believe that everything and everyone is out there to kill you” now bikers here in Thailand will drive along Soi’s window shopping and not taking notice of anything. They are like jaywalkers. Then there are old men who should never be on a bike.
