I went last October and I didn't need a visa because I only stayed three weeks. I just looked it up because I am going again in October. If you are staying thirty days or less an a American you only need your passport and a boarding pass or return ticket. They are also implementing a sixty day visa upon entering Thailand but that hasn't gone into affect yet. Check your information. If you are going for thirty days or less you don't need one you only need your boarding pass and passport

I got 30 day free last October. Now I don't think it's in effect yet but they are going to give a 60 visa for free to certain countries

They now have a six month visa for if I remember 10,000 baht and it can be renewed
