Hi... I have another question .. please... I am concerned about how much of my medicine I can bring with me to Thailand.. I have extra containers of my prescriptions.. they are all clearly labeled from the Veterans Administration... I have extra because I do not use all of the medicine each month and they send more each month.. Pain pills for my knees. I wanted to bring with me... as I will not be able to have prescription sent to Thailand.. I wonder if there is a limit?? thank you for your reasonable replies..

TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats have successfully brought their prescription medications into Thailand, but specific regulations must be followed. It is generally advisable to carry a supply that covers your stay, alongside a prescription or a doctor's letter. Certain medications, especially those classified as controlled substances (like specific painkillers), may require permits or could be banned entirely. Over-the-counter drugs are typically easier to obtain in Thailand, with many prescription medications available without a prescription at local pharmacies. Always check the Thai government regulations specific to the medications you intend to bring. Consider getting a letter from your doctor to clarify your needs if questioned.

Can you get prescription for being a diabetic ? TIA

Walk into a pharmacy and ask for what you want. Most prescription medications are available over the counter but some might require you to see a doctor.

When I came to Thailand reading all this advice on meds, I thought I was gonna be strip searched down to the interior of my luggage looking for meds and Tylenol etc.

A big fat zero, nothing, nada at entry. Nobody checked anything.

The best advice I got for meds is get hard paper copies of prescriptions before leaving you can go to any hospital pharmacy to get it filled if they have the meds.

Get a letter from your doctor saying you take the Tramadol for pain. Don't produce it unless you have to which would be about 1 chance in 100 -no one gets their bags checked on arrival. Don't listen to people who say you can buy them over the counter. Tramadol used to be available and perhaps still is in some places, but I personally tried to buy it and met with no success. Codeine products you can't buy. Bezodiazepam was aavailable ove the counter 30 years ago, but now would be a drug you would only get through a hospital. Thailand is really down on the heavier pain and sedative medications, while antibiotics etc are freely available over the counter. Bring it with you. You won't have a problem. No one will look at your stuff, but if they do, you have your doctor's letter and the pills are in their containers with prescription details attached.

Bringing Drugs Into Thailand

Make sure none of your medications are on the controlled substance list (mostly pain meds):

*********************************************************************************

The site is a collaboration between the Thai FDA, Narcotics Control, and Ministry of Public Health. Enter details, select name(s) of meds, get the answers. If any of them are, follow the instructions to apply for a permit to bring them into the country. Typically, you receive your permit in 2-3 days.

I am pretty sure you’ll be OK bringing a 60+ day supply now that they’ve extended the visa-exempt period. Have a great trip.

I bring at least 3 months worth of medicine. Never been search, flagged or asked questions. With a constant flow of 6 million tourists from around the world people are going to bring medication with them. I transport mine in my carry on. In Thailand no prescription is required and everything is over the counter. Being forgetful I mistakenly packed an empty pill bottle that cost $400 USD. My Thai wife was out with her friends and I called her and sent a photo of the medicine. She walked into a pharmacy in the Mall and bought the exact same medicine for 2500 Baht. $82 USD. I was flabbergasted. So check around once you get here. Be safe..🙏

Just apply for a permit 2 weeks before you go it’s very straight forward and saves time at customs and or the monkey house as many medicines can get you a visit to there if not permitted

I’ve never had an issue. Last trip March 2024. Other than Bangkok or possibly other major cities, one can get everything over the counter, except narcotics. Although will be in Thai descriptions. Not on shelf, but ask pharmacist. Often supervised speaks some English. More convience to bring your own 90 day supply.

Follow the instructions from the website of the Thai embassy in you country, the is the only legal way to bring medicine in to Thailand.

Do NOT listen to all the fools that say you can just bring the medicin, and nothing will happend, they were just lucky not to get checked.

Anything codeine based I was told us illegal in Thailand for example co codamol. However, I have brought controlled drugs into Thailand and flown with some that are banned on aircraft. I declared them, showed the prescription and I was allowed to carry them.

never a problem

It depends on the med what you need in order to bring them (if at all). There are four possibilities. Over the counter meds you can bring as much as you like. The next category you'll need your prescription and need to take the meds in original box and not more than you need during your stay. Then there's a category for which you need special permission from the embassy, a prescription alone doesn't suffice. And the heaviest meds (think of certain types of opiates) are just outright banned, you cannot take them at all.

yes they are rightly very hot in this stuff these days. Good advice.

Never had a problem!

You can get most prescription meds over the counter at pharmacies if you need more

Not the heavy stuff. A friend of mine tried to buy it. I’m pretty sure he was a drug addict as he came with none and I suspect his American doctor(s??) had cut him off. He asked at a pharmacy and they said sorry you have to go to a hospital and see a doctor for that. The doctor said no. I was rather impressed actually. It seems these days that it’s the US, not Thailand, that hands them out like candies. Anyway to answer your question. Don’t check them. That looks like drug smuggling. Make sure it’s very clear that this stuff was prescribed by a genuine doctor. You could call him the Bangkok Hospital near to where you are staying and ask them for very specific requirements.

What I referred to are usual prescribed medications for "normal" medical disorders which in western countries such as mine require a prescription because they are not "over the counter" medications. Even Thailand there are restrictions.

@Graham *****
I agree with you.

would I need a prescription for tramadol?? and for Synthroid Levothyroxine.. which is a thyroid hormone replacement medicine..
Sue *******
@Jack ****
I went to Thailand in April and found my thyroid medication in several pharmacies which you could buy over the counter. I wanted to know if available if we moved there.
Peter *******
@Jack ****
leave the Tramadol. Take the thyroid

@Jack ****
You'll find out when you ask
Lynnette *******
How many months are you coming for? Bring what you need plus a bit extra, get a letter or copy of prescription is a good idea. Check what sort of pain relief it is, some may need specific permission.

tramadol prescription.. mild pain relief

mild? Lol. I'd not touch that unless I was dying. I've had major surgery for a total knee replacement and avoided taking it. .

"because of the risks of physical dependence, opiate addiction and overdose, and it has become a controlled drug in many countries." I use paracetamol and meloxicam for arthritis pain and joint issues.

I only use tramadol.. on the occasions that my knees feel very painful.. not often.. this is why I have extra containers of the pills..
Lynnette *******
@Jack ****
seems an excessively strong painkiller for occasional painful knees. But I guess it depends what sort of injury your knees sustained.
Stephen ***********
If those pain pills are like oxytocin or oxycodone I think you need permission to bring them into Thailand
