The law is a little vague on this. It'll probably come down to the person checking you in how strict they'll be. As has been said, immigrations rarely checks.

Myself, I was even advised by the person checking me in once to get a cheap bus ticket. It really can get accepted.

you'll get promotional offers, x GB for y days for z THB, etc. There are some very attractive offers out sometimes. Use those when your package runs out.

You can load money on your SIM in malls, but also in the app if you have a Thai bank account.

I use one of those promotions continuously. 10 GB for 7 days for 30 baht. Sounds too good to be true, but is not.

There's another promotion coming by every now and then, same data same days but 105 baht if I'm correct, and that is also cheap. But I'm getting that for 30 baht, every week.

You really gotta work hard to use 40 GB. You will not need more.

combination of wrong answer and no check. Not getting checked is fairly common. But if an operator says fine, doesn't mean check-in crew would do the same.

But happy it worked out, spending money on this pointless requirement especially if you have a return within 90 days would not be great.

check-in crew said this? Then they've been lenient. But the question has an official answer (that you can't fly then), and on the phone they can't give you any other.

Anyway, happy this worked for you.

no need to ask the carrier, they'll always say that it is required. They just don't always check.

Some offices give you an extension denied stamp, giving you 7 days. This is not an extension however, and that matters for how it's counted: the 7 days start counting from the day you apply. So best case scenario, applying on the very last day, you get only 6 extra days. Looking also at weekend closures, you can only makes this work if you apply on Friday 29 November.

You can also go for a border bounce to refresh the initial 60 days, taking the freedom to assume that you made two mistakes in your story and that you are not on any visa and also not for 90 days, but on 60 days visa exempt. Then you save yourself also the first (and only) extension. Just keep in mind that entering Laos or Cambodia costs money as well so from a cost perspective the two solutions may come out similar still.
