Once you have submitted your application you can book your appointment immediately, even if it is still pending. There were loads of appointment slots available and I managed to get the one I wanted. I also called them up with the same concern, they said that if I can't find a suitable appointment, not to worry, just to call them back and they will arrange something.

That's what I would have expected... But employment is indeed a requirement at the London embassy
