Area few yrs ago I was stopped just outside Hue Hin when I offered my IDP they weren't interested and asked for my UK DL. But it be on the safe side not living here full time I got a Thai DL
Good luck to you. I submitted my documents 27 weeks ago tomorrow, no further forward still waiting. For yellow book and pink ID. Married to a Thai for almost 4 years. Moved back to Thailand in January this year.
Went to the office to have my docs checked, given an appointment for my test which consisted of 1) colour/Eyesight test. I.e. saying which colour of traffic light came up did this for both eyes. 2) reaction test press accelerator pedal till red light came on then press brake pedal your reaction was measured but green light coming on don't let a red light come on.
If passed you're given a slip. Photo taken DL issued paid the fee. Walked out the door 1 hour later.
I used onward ticket last time but didn't need it. I got my 30day on arrival. 30day extension, 90day day retirement 'O' followed by 12 mth Retirement 'O' extension.
I use mytello to call UK from my Thai phone or via the internet. 0.3B a min with 1.6 B connection fee. No time limit on calls whilst you have credit. I call UK every week using it.
I arrived on a 30 day visa of entry from UK. Transferred funds in to Thai bank. Was granted a 30 day extension, followed by a 90 day extension. Followed by a years Retirement 'O' visa extension. From start to finish I paid 1900, 2000, 1900 Baht. It was straight forward if you have all the necessary forms and proof they require.
To be honest I am having more hassle getting my yellow house book and Thai ID. Now entered week 13 and no further forward.
I guess we were lucky as the shipping agent contacted our Thai contact and negotiated a price for them to see our boxes/goods through customs. If my memory serves me correct 1500 Baht was paid. Everything was inside our house before we arrived.
I shipped from UK, registered with the shipping company and custom forms in my wife's name, with Thai ID. No problems, also used a contact in Thailand.
