TLDR : Answer Summary
Entering Thailand as a tourist typically requires proof of onward travel, though experiences can vary. Many airlines may deny boarding without such proof, as they are responsible for ensuring compliance with immigration rules. While immigration authorities might not always check for proof of onward travel, it is strongly advised to have a valid ticket for a departure from Thailand, which can include affordable options like a canceled flight or a bus/train ticket to a neighboring country. Some users have reported successful use of services that provide valid tickets for a small fee.
ur right return ticket means ur leaving the country, it doesn’t have to same country where you flew from

Most people visiting Thailand are tourists with Return tickets.
Whether 30 day no visa or 30 day+ no problem.
But in general, if you have a SINGLE ticket and NO VISA the airline and Immigration may ask for proof of exit, ie onward ticket.
The airline normally checks.
Immigration may check too.
If you have a visa the check is unlikely, but no guarantees.

I had a one way ticket from Frankfurt and nobody asked about return ticket

It's rare, if ever, you will be asked, I never have been, but they may. If the requirements for whatever visa you are applying for states you need a return ticket, get one. Why tempt fate. If you are concerned about the cost to change it, go with an airline that will let you change it for free and just pay any upcharge. I just bought a one-way ticket because the instructions I read for my visa type said buy a ticket TO Thailand. It did not say buy a round-trip ticket. I have the website where it shows this so I have my proof.

What about a return ticket within 60 days ? For visa on arrival ? As it is extendable ?

We recently flew to Thailand and could not board the plane without a return ticket we flew on Hawaiian airlines to NRT. We tried to check in and they made us book a flight before they would print a boarding pass. We had a 30 day Thai visa exemption.
so you will be getting a work permit? Is it for a contract period or indefinite? If indefinite, probably no. Contract period, Yes unless you renew your contract or get a new job. I have never been asked for a return ticket at the airport but if it is a requirement for you visa they can always ask and cause you problems.
Unvaccinated passengers must take a COVID‑19 test within 72 hours before departure to Thailand. Antibody and blood tests are not acceptable for travel.
From 1 July 2022, Thai authorities will accept the following COVID‑19 tests: RT‑PCR, PCR, Pro ATK, Antigen, Nucleic acid, NAT and LAMP.
Note:
Children below 6 years old are exempt from the COVID‑19 testing requirement regardless of nationality but are required to travel with their parents.
Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated children between 6 and 17 years old who are travelling with unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated parents must present their individual COVID‑19 test result.
Children below 18 years old who are travelling with fully vaccinated parents are exempt from vaccine or COVID‑19 testing requirements.
COVID‑19 test result must be issued within 72 hours before travelling to Thailand.
Self ATK will not be accepted for air travel.
Vaccination requirements
To be considered fully vaccinated, you must have received the last required dose (as required) of a COVID‑19 vaccine at least 14 days before your travel date.
I used onward ticket last time but didn't need it. I got my 30day on arrival. 30day extension, 90day day retirement 'O' followed by 12 mth Retirement 'O' extension.

My impression is that the Immigration officer uses his own judgment. If you have bloodstains on a torn t-shirt and needle scars on your forearms, he might not trust that you will leave in a timely fashion. OnwardTicket dot com is an easy fix. Even cheaper: when you are about to go through passport control, buy a ticket online with 24 hours cancellation time. Cancel after you pass through Immigration. Check in advance that cancellation will incur no fees.
I am not wrong I just said after over 100 times of entering Thailand visa exempt I have never been asked for a return ticket, similar to many people who posted here.
, but visa exemption is for a stay of maximum 30 days.
But you can go to immigration office and pay 1900 baht for an extension.
However, you are, according to Thai law, not allowed to enter Thailand without a visa or a proof of a return ticket if you are travelling on visa exemption.
Check with any Thai authorities and then you will find out that you are wrong.
not correct, there many countries that are allowed to enter without a visa. This is called visa exempt.

Not a problem, never been asked to show a onward ticket.

Legally yes you do need to show onward journey. It is your airline's decision when you check-in. They can deny boarding if you have no onward journey booked. This means you then have to scramble around at check-in to book an outward flight.

Its not depends actually bcz rules is rules if u are not return ticket or to another country departure ticket u cannot boarding to plane.
Depend it some airline accept too bus ticket or ship way tickets for departure.

I guess it depends on which country you r coming from?...I'm from Singapore, and so many times into Thailand, I've never been asked to show a return ticket during custom.
Henrik ****
It depends on your visa. Otherwise buy an onward ticket here: onwardticket.com for something like 12 USD.
I couldn't 2 out of 3 times in the past. Depends who is at the Immagration booth upon entry.

I've came in Without departure ticket pre Cov tho

The main problem with the one way ticket is the staff at your departing airport. Some won’t let you board the plane without proof of you leaving Thailand before the 30 days. They don’t care about the ability to extend your stay. They are only concerned about you having the proof of leaving.
There are many cheap options. I usually just book a flight to Vietnam. If I use it cool, if not, oh well. It saves the hassle trying to board the plane.

So can I buy return ticket for

days and get 30 day visa on arriival? Then extend this in Thailand?
if have a metv visa six months sometime they want to see if you have a ticket You need to prove that you leave the country after two months. In krabi they forced me to buy the ticket online from my phone in front of them, I always wrote in my passport the number of the flight with which I had to leave after two months
they never ask on the Thai end if you have a visa. It's prior to leaving your home country. I've had this problem with Air Canada with an itinerary longer than my visa allows.
not correct they never ask, police can do and somewhere happen, in krabi yes

If you use a US based website, most of them let you cancel a ticket with full refund within 24 hours of purchase. Print off your itinerary, and there's your proof of onward travel.

Any US based website still offers 24 hour cancellation, I just double checked. If you need to use a VPN to take a US IP address, that should fix it.
it has now become very rare you can cancel a ticket within 24 hrs since COVID. Many now charge you for the privilage. I know, I have just been researching tickets and I didn't find one website that stated "Free Cancellation within 24 hours." If you know any please share.

Buy a fully refundable ticket, cancel after you arrive bkk.
I have tried it. It worked, no problem. With Lufthansa. They checked at check-in whether I was in the system as having an outbound ticket. The ticket was cancelled after 48h from date and time of flying, when I was already in Thailand. Paid 10 USD.
But u can buy a bus ticket Thailand to Lao and have a exit ticket to show that way.

It's "required" according to official immigrarion rules.
Some airlines check and refuse boarding if you don't have ticket out.
Previously, you could get lucky. These days I'm not sure.
Brandon ************
It's highly unlikely that immigration will ask to see your proof of onward travel. They only ask this of people they are trying to deny entry to.
Where you will likely run into trouble is with your airline when you go to check-in for your flight to Thailand. They will check your passport and look for either your Tourist Visa or no visa, and then ask to see proof of onward travel within 60 days for tourist visa, or 30 days for visa exempt. If you cannot show them something, they will refuse to let you board your flight.
You can show them a bus or train ticket to a neighboring country, a cheap throwaway flight to a nearby country like Singapore, or google "onward travel ticket" for other options.
Ian *****
Nope. Almost every airline won't let you board a flight if you are a tourist with 1 way ticket and no ticket out. Ticket can be to anywhere and cancelled next day
