Drove to vientiane border from pattaya, drank 1 drink and came back to Thailand. When I left Thailand the IO lady was looking at the computer quite a few moments, I didnt ask why but I was thinking because I did my TDAC 5minutes before going to her 🤔
When I got back, the IO wanted to tell me that my visa is DTV and I will get 180days, that was quite funny, that was all the conversation we had 😆 never experienced explaining before, for 4years
Why I post is the budget;
Car 700thb
Gas 2500thb (honda city)
Laos visa 1700thb(+100thb because i forgot to take passport picture) thats $52 if you pay with dollars its $40
Leave your car next the 711 parking lot, 50thb. Tuktuk to bus station 50thb (i offered he accepted), bus 30thb each way
Thats a total of 5160thb for another 180days. And about 24h of time (had 2 of us, each driving one way)
I also got a speeding ticket of 1000thb, they set a trap at the mountain speedlimit lowered to 40 (altho same time says cars 60, who knows) when we were rolling down only using break 😅, a lot of fog so cant see much, i was following car ahead of me because i could see the lights, for "some reason" they looked at him and let him go and picked me 🤣
Also got picket at 1 of the 6 big stops we encountered...
My friend has a US driver's license but did not get an International Driving Permit before coming to Thailand. Can they get one here to drive in Thailand? or get a Thai driver's license without having to take the test? (Non-immigrant visa)
Anyone successfully received a drivers license in Thailand on a DTV? I drive my gfs car all the time but id feel better about it if I actually had a Thai license.
This could be really useful for anyone driving in Thailand – or planning to use a Thai license abroad. I just came across this info, and I wanted to check if it’s still accurate. Maybe someone here can confirm?
Here’s what I read:
Starting May 1, the Department of Land Transport in Thailand announced a new update:
A new type of international driving license will be available. And this one is special—it’s valid for 3 years and recognized in 84 countries under the 1968 Vienna Convention.
Up until now, Thai international driving permits were only valid for 1 year and recognized in 101 countries, mostly under the older 1949 Geneva Convention.
This change means that:
• Thailand is stepping in line with the Vienna standard
• Thai licenses will now be accepted in countries that follow the 1968 agreement (like much of Europe)
• And Thailand may also start accepting international permits from those same Vienna countries in return
⸻
Can anyone confirm if this is already in effect?
And has anyone already applied for the new 3-year version?
This could be a big deal for a lot of us – especially those who travel frequently or want to drive abroad without renewing every year!
I am busy organisimg an international driving permit(IDP). Do the Thai traffic officers require the hard copy of the IDP or will a digital copy suffice?
IDP international driving license / insurance question.
I'm a regular visitor to Sakon Nakhon and have a couple of people who kindly let me use their cars when I visit. I have an IDP with my full British driving license but am unsure if the owners insurance will cover me for the odd days that I borrow a car.
Later this year I'm moving to Thailand under a DTV visa an I'll probably take the Thai driving test as well to be sure.
