but is it necessary to leave the country for that? I am asking as someone whose ex employer failed to ever get me a WP because they either were clueless or didn't care. I'm still in the dark about it all.

OK point made. But Thailand being a destination for millions (it's not Bhutan), and Thai not being a regional let alone a world language, it would be nice to be told about these requirements in a language understandable to at least some foreigners.

Are you talking about the no-cost 30 day visa exemption (which is not a visa)? I've heard there is a limit of 2 of those per year.
