Check out the new DTV visa! It's a 5 years tourist visa. Even retired people are preferring this Visa because of the low requirements... Don't listen to people who are saying you should work and this and that bla. If you think, you can live comfortably here as a tourist then go for the DTV.
I don't want to bias with Thai people as every country/ culture has its faults. But comparatively, my experience is that Thais are the most peaceful/ welcoming people I have met in my life. As far as not saying a word, I think that's exactly how a society should be, we don't agree with everyone, but we should be able to respect.
After living in Thailand for 8 years, and practically in all major cities, islands etc., I can assure you that you will feel welcomed and accepted anywhere in Thailand. It's a completely different world than what you are used to in the US. As a culture, Thai people don't care about skin color. However, there is a historic tension going on with neighboring countries. And Indian tourists have gotten a bad rep here.
It's pure speculation and fear mongering. This is a Tourist Visa and not a non-Immigrant Visa. The fact it's granted 5 years and the initial reason for getting the Visa expires after the first 6 months there is zero reason to believe they care about what you are doing on this Visa other than being a tourist.
Visa policies change here in Thailand every few months... for sure every year... what to speak of the entire world is going through some huge transformation! Hard to believe people still think they can expect stability in their long-term planning...
