Does the resident certificate need to be for one year? Can I only get a long term resident certificate if I'm on a long term visa? What I'm hoping is that I can get a DTV and then a one year resident certificate, so that even if Chaing Mai DMV don't accept my DTV, they'll accept my one year resident certificate instead.

OK good to know thanks. Chiang Mai office specified non immigrant visa to convert to the 5 year license. They didn't mention long term resident certificate. I can ask around if they say no to a DTV.

Hmm I see. So even if a DTV is not a non-immigrant visa, I can use it to get a permanent address instead. Thanks.

The DMV told me yesterday that I'll need to be on a non-immigrant visa to convert my 2 year license to a 5 year one. It's not clear yet what class of visa the DTV is.
