I don't talk about the 1st year - I am well aware that it is not an option. I talk about the following years. So your deposit is only tied up the first year if you had transferred the monthly payment during that year

funny to see how matters are handled in different immi offices. We went to a hotel in Udon Thani for 3 days recently and when we returned home I asked our immi if we should file a new tm30 ( I asked on the Line app) and the answer was yes!

Can I apply for a TM30 registration myself if I'm not in Thailand yet?

you can as well use the official tm30 from immigration. They improved it a while ago and it is easy to do. The first time I used it after having applied for a userid and pw I had to supply copies of my wife's Thai id and housebook. The web site tells you that - no problems
