hi group I want to live permanently in Thailand next year with my Thai wife. I plan to go there with a non o visa based on marriage. I will have 400.000 baht in my Thai account. My problem is the required health insurance which is very expensive for me. Any possibility to avoid this? I have a friend who has lived with his Thai wife for many years and he gets his permission to stay renewed every year without health insurance - an agent take care of that.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks to live permanently in Thailand with their Thai wife on a Non-O visa based on their marriage but is concerned about the expensive health insurance requirement. Community responses clarify that there is no mandatory health insurance requirement for the Non-O visa based on marriage, although having it is advised. It is mentioned that insurance is typically required for a Non-OA visa, which is different and requires coverage for the entire duration.

You pay for insurance with the hope you will never need it.

Its 100.000+ a day for ICU if you, god forbid, had an accident

Morning check your Messenger I just PM you

Health insurance requirement is only for a retirement visa at the moment (non-OA)

For a marriage visa (Non-O based on marriage), you don't need it.

Here's some more info about it.

@Peter ********
Non OA is a different “animal” altogether. Can only be got in your home country and needs mandatory insurance, police checks and medical checks.

I will get the non o visa in my home country - go to Thailand and get permission to stay for 1 year then renew that permission after 1 year etc etc

@Kim ********
ok now understand and thats why you need insurance as you are getting visa in your home country. If you apply for non o in Thailand đŸ‡č🇭 you wouldn't require insurance but you would need 800k Thai baht in a thai bank 3 months for applying for it 😉
Chris *******
@Peter ********
no that is for retirement 800k NOT marriage 400k.

However depending on the embassy where the visa is obtained you may be required to have insurance to cover the initial visa 90 days.

The in-country extension will not require any Insurance.

This is becoming the norm with non-0 obtained outside of country.

Not to be confused with OA which requires Insurance to be valid the entire duration.

Stuart *********
As
@Bra****
stated there is no requirement for medical insurance for a non O based on marriage (or extensions of such). Whilst it’s always good to have some it’s not mandatory.
Christiaan *******
Always good to have medical insurance. Unexpected events happen when you least expect it.
Michael ********
@Christiaan ******
yes but on your terms not on x amount outpatient x amount in patient as reqiired by OA visa

@Michael *******

tak John det ved jeg godt - men vil koste ca 100.000 Baht stigende til 160.000 Baht pr Ă„r og det kan jeg ikke klare pt

@Kim ********

@Kim ********

I don't know who told you there's a requirement for health insurance on a marriage visa extension, but there isn't. Maybe the agent said it just to keep business?
