Why was I denied entry to Thailand and how can I ensure a stamp next time?

Just got denied entry from Da Nang Vietnam into Don Mueang Airport. They are making me buy a return ticket back to Vietnam.

Edit WHY I GOT DENIED: Reason I was denied entry is because they suspect im not a tourist. I have a USA passport and I do the visa exempt each time. I made 3 trips in Thailand with extensions each time. Stayed about 2-4 weeks out of Thailand each time. Couple overstays of one and two days. I had no cash and no ticket out of Thailand but I had sufficient funds in my bank account. They never checked.

I plan on coming back to Thailand asap. Any recommendations on the best way to guarantee I get a stamp next time? Now that I’m going back to Da Nang how likely is it that I can fly into CNX and get a visa exempt stamp that way? Would they decline me just based on a flag in their system/my passport?

Don’t mind paying for an agent if they are highly trusted and credible. Any recs?

Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user was denied entry into Thailand upon returning from Da Nang, Vietnam, likely due to a combination of factors including their frequent visits on visa exemptions, minor previous overstays, lack of cash, and no return ticket. Many commenters suggest that to avoid future issues, the user should obtain a proper long-term visa (like a DTV or METV) instead of relying on visa exemptions, and always have the required documentation ready, including proof of funds and onward travel. Some also recommend using an immigration agent for assistance, especially given the user's history but caution against continued visa exemption entries, which may raise red flags with immigration authorities.

ok. Thanks. The third entry in one year could have been a factor in the rejection. In the past anyway, the clock reset on December 31st, so it was best to straddle calendar years.. The overstays would have been a red flag causing them to select you out for enhanced scrutiny. Probably best at this point is to wait a while and apply to the Embassy for your next visit. I wish you luck.

So, how did that work going back to Vietnam when you have to apply for the evisa and it takes 3 to 5 business days to get it?
Terary **********
I have pulled visas from the Thai Embassy Washing DC while in Thailand. I then exit and return. You can pull a visa locally or from the US. For me it was 1 week. But that is no guarantee of entry, they have been cracking down.

I would travel to a land crossing and cross by land. I think that would be less of a pain in the neck if you get denied.

Good luck!

Keep us updated.
Henrik *****
You have come to the end of visa exempt, and have to stay outside if Thailand for a long period, which can not come as a surprise, when you have been milking the visa system for too long.

Every body who repeatedly travels to Thailand knows the 3 requirements to get into Thailand as tourist,

money ( 20.000 Baht cash ),

A ticket out of Thailand within the visa period ( visa excempt = 60 days )

Hotel or other accomdation booking.

If not fullfilling those requirements, make you in admissible to enter Thailand.

Every entry into Thailand is on the discretion of the Immigration officer in front of you, and it will seldom chance anything to ask for a higher ranking officer, if you don’t have the 3 basic requirements in order.

Go back to your homecountry, and before visiting any other country, make sure you know the rules and laws of that country, so you don’t blatently ignore the requirements to stay as a guest in any country.

You experienced the “Bad boys out, good guys in” policy of Thailand.

Entry denial plus his overtstays will most definitely negatively influence any long visa application. If you do it will serve you right.

After my first 90 days i went to Vietnam for a month in Jan. At check in at Ho Chi Minh they asked to see that I had an onward trip out of Thailand. I showed them on my laptop and asked if I would need to show it in DMK and they said no. So I put my laptop in my checked baggage.

At DMK I was interrogated again before I could retrieve checked baggage and nearly refused entry until I said I was actually back to apply for a retirement visa that week. Which I was. That satisfied them.

They are definitely cracking down and you need a legit visa or in the process of applying for one (not tourist). If you’ve come and gone multiple times I’m not even sure an onward flight is enough to get you through these days. They are wary and asking questions in my experience

For the NPC commenting: Current cost with agent is about 6k baht to get in if it's from a denial entry, or 4k baht if you don't have a recent denial entry. Multiple agents offer such services including the agency owning this FB group (name on banner above). It's profitable to reject entry so that most will use agent to get in. You can also get in at border with agent. Agents work with different immigration officers. The officer wait for you at the gate and he's/she's the one stamping your passport, that's why it's guaranteed entry.

Emile ******
Get a proper visa. It's been clearly evident that they are clamping down on visa exempt entries. You don't share in what time frame those 3 previous visits with extension were, but by their reasoning for denying entry, they can't be too far apart.

Regulations say a return/onward ticket, proof of funds in cash, and lodging must be presentable. And just because in most cases one doesn't get asked for these, doesn't mean there is no chance of being asked to show any of these, it's kinda on you for lacking preparation.

Go back to da nang, and apply for a proper visa like DTV or an METV.

Having said that, having a visa is still not a guarantee of entry, and you could still get denied based off of previous issues like overstay and too many visa exempt entries.
Darren *********

Have you read about expats being asked for a return or onward ticket below?

All immigration agents have the discretion to ask for evidence of departing Thailand.

If a traveler reads your experience and decides to enter Thailand without evidence of departing, and they are asked for evidence of departing by an immigration agent, their excuse that ‘Mathew said I don't need departing evidence’

.. will not be accepted.

BTW.. I have talked to several other normal looking tourists who have been asked to show evidence of departing Thailand.

as side bar to the above:

Once the ETA is implemented, everybody will be required to list evidence of a return or onward ticket.
Matthew *********
Never said you didn't it, just said they rarely ask. Which makes me wonder why they ask you so many times. Can one can just purchase a refundable ticket, a CHEAP onward ticket and even purchase a dummies tickets as many have listed the site. It's not a big issue and for the ETA, don't hold your breath. You obviously aren't an expat loving here. Your showing all the details of a wanna be but your not.

Ok, I stand corrected.
Brandon ************
It's been stated over and over and over again, you must have CASH ONLY if the immigration officers ask for proof of required funds. They will not accept your bank account, bank statements, banking apps, credit cards or anything else. And there are no ATMs between the plane and immigration.

There are 3 legal requirements to enter Thailand as a tourist:

1) Proof of funds (20,000 baht or equivalent in a major currency) IN CASH ONLY

2) Proof of onward travel (a flight out within the number of days you'll receive when you arrive, so 60 for a tourist)

3) Proof of lodging (a hotel booking for at least the first few days)

If you don't have one of these it makes it very easy for them to deny entry. If you have all of them, it makes it more difficult for them to deny entry, but they can still do it.

difficult to say. Everything is up to the discretion of the immigration officer you're standing in front of. If you can give them a good reason about why you stopped working and why you're back so soon after that if they ask. Plus have the 3 proofs.
Angelik *******
@Brandon ***********
there might be at least two good reasons: the contract finished, need to find another work or like in my case wanna go home, but first need to get my belongings and finish some things up. The whole no grace period after your contract finishes is a really big issue that Thailand doesn't want to solve. Why do people who spent years living and working here are not entitled to one month grace period after their job is done? Yes, I know there's an option of buying 7 days, but first of all it's not enough time and second it's not fair to make people pay for 7 day extension after they've already paid for the year visa, WP and jumped through all the hoops.
Damon *******
@Angelik ******
serious question...do people not know when their contracts are up? If I had a six month contract come month four I'd be looking for new work or wrapping up my legal affairs. Are these open-ended contracts and the businesses just end contracts without 30 days notice or what have you?
Angelik *******
@Damon ******
first of all, I'm not talking about that. You can know that you have 12 months before your contract ends, but your visa ends on the same day and you have to leave the country on the same day, which is not always possible. Your employer, for example, your school, expects you to come in to work on the last day of your contract even if you don't have any work to do, and then you have to catch a flight to Bangkok and outside the country on the same day, do you think it's fair, possible and makes sense? Cause even though sometimes it's physically achievable, it's still too much to ask. Second, you might want to relax for a few days or travel to a nice place after you finished your work and before you leave Thailand for good. As for looking for a new work, the school will only notify you 30 days or less that they are unwilling to renew the contract, and guess what? The time when your contract ends is not a good time to find a new job, not to mention the time before that. Most schools only start hiring in April or May, when your visa ends in March. By the way, the easiest transition between jobs is to get a new contract before your visa ends so you don't have to leave the country to get a new non b, but again, it's pretty much impossible, cause government schools don't care about your inconveniences, they will start hiring in April even if they already know how many teachers are leaving school. And last one, I don't understand why Thailand won't grant a 30 days grace period for non b visa holders.

well i guess 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. i never travel with onward tickets
Tony ******
@Brandon ***********
your missing the point if your passport has multiple extensions with border runs and you are flighting to surrounding counties on short trips . That's what is the issue
Brandon ************
@Tony *****
I'm well aware of what the issue if. But don't make it even worse by giving them the simplest reason to deny you entry on top of it.
Dave **********
Brandon. May i ask your advice ? I'm intending to convert my Tourist Visa after arrival in Bangkok this year, to a retirement visa . In the past I've entered with a 1 way ticket but that was 7 years ago. Would a train ticket to Penang be sufficient to show leaving within 60 days? Or does it need to be a flight? I'm aware that Emerates airline may ask to see a return or evidence of leaving within visa date. Which also throws up a problem as the visa can be extended for another 30 days. Do we need a return ticket within 60 days or a 90 days? Many thanks
Damon *******
@Dave *********
Brandon hit the nail on the head...why travel on a tourist visa at all? If you know you want the retirement visa just get that. Otherwise, it's just more hassle, more time, more money, more effort.
Dave **********
Damon from what i know to get a retirement visa here in the UK requires Police report, Medical insurance for the period along with the 800 k in a bank. (No idea how people do that without going to Thailand to get a bank account!) The only way i have got and renewed my retirement visa is by arriving on tourist visa, having 800 k I've already transfered via Wise to my SCB bank account which I opened when i first visited Thailand. Along with a letter from SCB to confirm my account and 800k , also an address. The trip to the Immigration, is done in 30 mins. The main reason im now looking at DTV is that i have to be back in UK for a few months, so 6 month stay in Thailand each year would be ideal for me.
Brandon ************
@Dave *********
If you're asked for proof of onward travel, it needs to be within the number of days you receive on arrival, with no extension. Some airlines and immigration officers might accept a train ticket and some might not. Impossible to say for sure. Everyone will accept a plane ticket.

But that begs the question, WHY would you even want to do it that way? Get the visa from your Thai embassy before you travel. Then you don't have to worry about any of that, you can open a bank account easily if you don't already have one, and you save yourself many hours and a trip to immigration.
Sylvia ********
@Brandon ***********
yes great difficulty right now
@Dave *********
to open a bank account with some form of visa, so certainly the best option for you

I have just returned to DMK from Bali. While there I applied for an EVisa through the Embassy in Jakarta. 14 days before departure. Four times this Embassy emailed me to show proof of accommodation address for all of my stay in Thailand. Four times I replied with the details as requested. As a result I had to return to Thailand with no visa and was questioned at Immigration. I showed them Photographic proof of the correspondence between Jakarta and myself. They more or less admitted it was strange and granted me a visa exemption. Next day The Embassy in Jakarta emailed me my e visa. All that trouble for nothing.

Any immigration officer has the discretion of asking for your onward or return ticket.

I have been asked twice for ticket evidence my last 5 entry trips.

Some ex-pats circulate false advice that you don’t need ticket evidence but that is not always true.

Consider having a ticket as immigration entry insurance. 🙏🇹🇭

so you’ve been in country 3 times with no Visa and multiple overstays. Then you come back with no money and no onward ticket?

Why don’t you try buying a visa for the reason your in Thailand
Ilia *********
@Bob *********
because you need a lot of dinero for this visa and not everyone can allow himself
Damon *******
@Ilia ********
then he shouldn't be in the country as if he had it...

And more importantly he shouldn't have broken the law by overstaying his visa a couple of times. If you want to live in Thailand, you can get a number of different visas, it sounds like each time he was traveling on a regular 90-day tourist visa, doing short runs and coming right back. That isn't what that visa is for and the laws for it are pretty straightforward. This was an avoidable mistake or an attempt to game the system. IT sucks if it was the former, but Jacob, my guy, check the laws concerning you're getting into and staying in a foreign country. That should be common sense. If it was the latter, well, that makes it harder on everyone.

We the people want an answer to why you were denied?
Lynnette *******
@Brandon ***********
he said they told him to buy "return ticket" so maybe no proof of leaving the country? Like most countries it's usually a requirement if you have no visa.
Barbara ********
@Lynnette ******
I’ve only heard of it in Thailand. I have lived in Asia for 10 years, but I guess some places I went to I booked a return flight but recently booked one way in Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia
Lynnette *******
@Barbara *******
airlines workdwide can and might ask to see evidence of leaving the country. It's been like that for years. Irrespective of you being asked, it's a possibility.
Barbara ********
@Lynnette ******
which other countries in SE Asia require you to have a return ticket?
Lynnette *******
@Barbara *******
proof of leaving the country is a standard requirement airlines often impose. They can be made responsible for flying you back if you're denied entry. It's been like that for a very long time. And some countries also ask to see proof of leaving. If you want to know which ones you'll have to look them up.

I heard Thailand gets the bottom-of-the-barrel, most vile scum of the expats in Asia, but Ashey Pooh is a whole new level of waste matter. If we distillled some of the more miserable, cliched utterances of failures whiling away their final hours in beer, urine and vomit, with only FB to keep him company, Ashy would be the embodiment of this foul excrement. He won't wake up some morning soon, buried in a pile of cheap beer cans, half-smoked ciggies and all the bags of trash in the street waiting to cleared away. The blunder from down under will be incinerated and rightfully be rendered into Ash. Nobody will notice, care or miss it.
