Normal, it took me just under a year to be approved for entry on a spousal visa and that was from the U.K.

Buy a REALLY expensive return ticket then cancel it in Thailand.

ummm.. and what happens if they don’t let you extend your visa because you don’t have enough money you then lose out on your return ticket. Like most people do, onward travel and buy throwaway ticket for 30 quid or so then buy ticket in Thailand for return home.
