I'm currently on my last extension of stay based on education. I would like to change my extension stay to be based on age over 50. Do I need to bring some sort of a termination letter from my school?

I'm thinking this is like dining Thai style in a restaurant. All the dishes come out at different time and not necessarily in the order you would prefer.

My optimistic arm chair interpretation is that this change might allow those who are self-employed and working remotely to be able to obtain a work permit and hence pay taxes. Wishful thinking I'm sure...

Absolutely. Though you still need the "golden ticket" work permit in order to work legally.

If you're not handing over cash to an immigration officer and receiving a receipt in exchange, there is something fishy going on.

Option 3: Van pool from the consulate to the bridge (~150b) and then grab a taxi on the other side directly to the airport (750b).

Last time I did that I left the consulate at ~215pm and was sipping a beer at the airport by 5pm. I had to take the initiative in Nong Khai to ask for a taxi tho.

I alluded to issues at the consulate in HCMC in another post. My comment was was based on a first hand account from a couple who experienced quite a bit of friction applying for an ED visa back in late April. They were given quite a hassle at the time of submitting the application (initially refused) and then again when the visas were retrieved (third degree questioning plus an impromptu Thai language skills quiz). YMMV.

Yes, I read the whole comment, including the part where they cancelled the visas which had already been recorded in their passports.

This is the second story I've heard of petulant behavior by the Thai consulate in HCMC.
