What was the experience of applying for a 60-day visa at the Ho Chi Minh Thai Consulate?

Hi, I thought I would write about our experience at Ho Chi Min Thai Consulate. We arrived with all our paperwork for a 60 day visa, although we only had one flight ticket with both names on (mr/mrs). Friendly enough we felt and they sent us away to get another copy for the 2nd applicant. Although they gave us directions for a photocopy shop, it took 25 mins to walk there and back in searing heat. If you are applying as a couple, make sure you have copies of everything for each of you.

We handed everything in, paid our $80 and told to come back the following day. Off we went to the airport to catch our domestic Jetstar flight only to be told that dispite what their website says and what we were told by Jetstar, we could only fly with our passports. Taxi back, 1 hr wait over lunch and when we got to the counter, we explained the situation. We had a choice, wait until the next day or lose our $80. We decided to cancel the application because of flights and hotel paid but could not believe it when he reached down into his tray, pulled out our passports and stamped 'void' on our visa that had already been processed! When I asked why would he cancel them if they had already been done, he said if we wanted to keep them, come back tomorrow, end of story.

Apart from the lost $80, it cost us a further $50 for taxi's and flight changes (as we never got back in time for our flight). We also have to book another flight as our next trip was booked for 90 days later from Thailand. Thanks for your understanding guys!

Went to Brisbane Consulate earlier this year, put our 60 day applications in and told to collect them that same afternoon!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The author shares their challenging experience applying for a 60-day visa at the Thai Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City. They encountered issues due to not having separate flight tickets for each applicant, which led to a delay in processing and additional costs. After paying $80, their visa was voided when they attempted to cancel due to missed flights. They also expressed frustration over the consulate’s policies but noted a more positive experience at the Brisbane Consulate.

I cannot see this topic going any way but sideways :/

sorry, before this spirals out of control, I close comments. I see nothing wrong on the part of Thai Consulate HCMC.

This is the second story I've heard of petulant behavior by the Thai consulate in HCMC.

Tod Daniels We probably would agree with you, but it is not impossible to get your passport returned in 1 day with a visa. All we were asking for with a little bit of understanding under unfortunate circumstances, not unreasonable we feel.

@St***
, FWIW: in vientiane you can pick your visa up from 1-3:00 the following afternoon, BUT if you don't make it, they void the visa in your passport and you start all over from scratch.

Yes, I read the whole comment, including the part where they cancelled the visas which had already been recorded in their passports.

you did read that they needed their passport back the same day (which is totally NOT the policy of that consulate) right?

The consulate is a good, easy to deal with, not busy place to get visas from IF you meet the requirements..

sorry to hear that, :/ BUT from reading the story it seems the consulate would have issued you the visas under their normal criteria without a problem. So in that regard they are an okay consulate to use.

They have had that drop off one day, pick them up the next day policy for a LONG time and stopped offering same day service a few years ago too.

It's unfortunate that happened, but it is their policy. Many consulates put the visa stickers into your passport as soon as you apply and then they get signed off and stamped before you pick them up the next day.

Sorry that happened. :(

@Chri*****
I think it was more a Jetstar mix up that you couldn't fly domestically with a copy of your passport than anything else really.

The consulate seems like they were fine.

Not as sorry as we were, just a little understanding wouldn't have gone amiss. We had planned to pick our passports up on our return to HCM 4 days later.
