TLDR : Answer Summary
To ensure a short wait at the Vientiane consulate for a visa application, it's recommended to arrive early, ideally around 6:30 AM. Although the consulate opens around 8:00 AM, arriving early allows you to be among the first in line. Mondays tend to be the busiest days, while midweek (like Tuesdays) can be less crowded. For visa pickup on the following day, arriving early is crucial, especially if you have a flight to catch, as it increases your chances of getting your passport back in a timely manner.

The consulate at Vientiane has improved out of sight...turning up midweek is best, you can be out in no time and over on the Nong Khai side of the border by 3.30- 4.00 pm.

Thank you again Tod! yes, going on a Tues!

as long as you're not there on the dates the visa run companies from thailand show up (usually monday morning and thursday morning) you're okay ;)

Remember the next afternoon when you pick up your passport you get it back in the order you turned it in the day before. Meaning if you were number 300 the previous morning that is where you are the following afternoon to get your passport back.

SO in your case going early to turn in your passport WILL result in your getting your passport back faster the next afternoon when they give them out

Thank you Tod! Yes, I will most probably get there at 6am with a big book :)

Right, you want to pick up in the afternoon and get to a Nok air flight from Udon at 6? That can be done one of two ways:

1) You get to the consulate well before 1.30pm and get it exactly at 1.30 and get straight to the bus station (at Talat Sao) and you get the 2pm bus to Udon, which gets to the bus station at 4.15pm and you get straight in a tuk tuk and you get to the airport at about 4.35pm, or

2) You find some taxi guy in Vientiane who can drive you all the way to Udon airport. This will cost you at least 1,000b. If you miss the 2pm bus, this is your only option....

To variate to what Steve has said.

Van from in front of consulate to bridge 100-200 baht depending on the load.

On the other side alternative to taxi is a van - same company that has the van from UdonThani airport to border for 200 baht has the return service from border to Udon Thani airport for 150 baht.

I see, thanks so much for that Steve! Really helpful - I hope to get a beer in too! :P

Option 3: Van pool from the consulate to the bridge (~150b) and then grab a taxi on the other side directly to the airport (750b).

Last time I did that I left the consulate at ~215pm and was sipping a beer at the airport by 5pm. I had to take the initiative in Nong Khai to ask for a taxi tho.

Thank you Liam! I love that taxi idea!

You can get there as early as you want. They won't open the gate til they do, and won't begin processing til 8 or later. Mondays can have hundreds in line by the time they open. Fridays will often be empty at 9 (it once took me thirteen minutes to drop off and be done on a Friday).

I’ll add confirmation to this. If you want to make the last flight back on visa pickup day, you need to be done within the first 30 minutes. So make sure you are very early the day before, dropping off. Avoid Monday’s but I’d say mine up by 630 or even am. Endure the short wait that morning. It’s worthwhile.

Get there as early as you can. I was there at 7:10 am last month. There were 6 people infront of me. They opened the gates at 8:00am, so we could sit down inside the consulate. I was out of the building by 9:00 am. Next day I picked up my passport at 1:30 pm. My advice is to get there early.

you flying from Udon?

mmm you best go early in that case. Also i HIGHLY recommend taking a taxi from the consulate it costs more but a hell of a lot easier it will take you straight to the airport too. Pay no more than 1000 baht (possibly cheaper) even better get people to share it with you. The taxi will help you jump immigration queues too. (just pay a 20 baht "fee")

It's 6 I think - the last nok air one.

what times your flight?
Chris ********
bear in mind your application will not be avliabe until later on the pick up day because you will be nearly last in the que for returns. If you need to rush away the 2nd day you might have to go early actually

Thanks I mean on the pick up day though so I can make the flight back

no point in going early, turn up around 9.30-10 when the que has died down for less waiting around. Going in at 6.30AM will not ensure a "short wait" lol
