not if he is living in Thailand and/or other countries for most of the year…. And you are saying that this without understanding the OP’s circumstances and situation. Seems to me if he lives outside Australia he would no longer be tax resident, based on the little information shared.
Here are the actual rules and guidelines. Please explain how if this person lives overseas from Australia for most or more than 1/2 the year that that they can legitmately be Aus tax resident. I’m genuinely interested to know….. please help me understand….

It’s not exempt visa it’s visa exempt. So you have no visa, you have to apply for visas.
Immigration may ask for onward flights but I have entered and left Thailand visa exempt dozens of times in the last 18 months and only ever been asked either how long will you stay or when are you leaving, never asked to show anything.
That said, a more likely scenario is your airline may require you to show onward travel and if you don’t have, may refuse to fly you. I’ve been asked to show by Singapore Airlines and Viet Jet in the last 6 months.
you will not lose the Indian visa. Carry old passport with the visa and that’s ok. In fact they moved my visa stamp into my new passport at Indian immigration.
If you have the long term visa paperwork you should be able to get a visa waiver month without too much trouble, and you are doing what they told you to do, get a long term visa….from inside Thailand. Paperwork, relationship etc I think you have it covered.
