You're not paying to leave Thailand, you're paying to re-enter on the same extention/visa. The clue's in the name!

 You're mistaken. A multi entry tourist visa has a validity of 6 months from the day it's issued. Each entry will get you stamped into the country for 60 days. If it was issued on 1st Jan it can only be used untill 1st July.

 Visa validity starts the day it's issued, the multi-entry tourist visa is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

 That's only required if you're not a Citizen of the UAE and applying via the RTE Dubai, I'm guessing the OP doesn't have PR in the UAE!

Apply through VFS Global not the British Embassy. You send a copy of your passport and keep the old one.

 Incorrect. You send a copy of every page when applying for a new British passport. You keep the old passport.
