Can my son apply for a single entry visa to Thailand and then reapply for a multiple entry visa after returning home?

So I have a question for my son ( he’s not on Facebook) He is heading for Thailand to do some extended travelling leaving May 9 from Canada. His plans were to get a multi entrance visa. But now he has to fly back in September to Canada for a wedding. He will then stay home for about a month or so and then will return to Thailand. We realize now that the multiple entry only lasts 6 months. So would it work for him to do a single entry for the first trip and then when he is home then reapply for a multiple entry so he can spend the extended time there?? He would do the 60 days and then extend it each time for another 30 to maximize his time. Also going to go to Cambodia after his first entry and will fly back from there. Thanks for any insight into this!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user's son plans to travel to Thailand and initially intended to obtain a multiple-entry visa but is reconsidering due to his need to return home for a wedding in September. He is exploring the option of applying for a single-entry visa for his first trip and then reapplying for a multiple-entry visa when he returns to Canada. The discussion highlights the rules for tourist visas in Thailand, emphasizing the need for proper planning regarding visa duration and entry conditions.

He just chooses not to spend time on social media. Lots of negativity on Facebook and he likes to spend his time doing other stuff. Each to their own!

doesn’t need it either! Would do just fine on his own as he has done extensive travelling and has been to Thailand twice. But rules change over time and sometimes it good to have real life experiences to compare with. What I don’t get is when people comment the stupid things such as this when it has nothing at all to do with the question asked in the first place!! And you wonder why people chose not to be on Facebook and join groups that are set out to answer questions!!

I'm going to recommend that he join Facebook. There's a ton of information available & his travels will be much more pleasant if he joins.

If he ends up going to Pattaya he definitely wont be returning for a wedding thats for sure. The last thing on his mind will be leaving and getting on a flight home.

is that because he will have probably caught a disease and needs continuous treatment 🤣🤣

The visa lasts for 6 months from the day he enters Thailand. So if for example he enters 5th May his visa lasts until 4th November. If he enters Thailand on 4th November he will get stamped in no problem for another period (60 days i think)

@Andy *******
he actually wants to stay longer when he goes back, so that a multiple entry would start when he goes back in October/November. That’s why he would just use a single entry for the first time. Just wondered if it would be okay to do all of that!!

I've just reread and see he doesn't want to use the METV for his initial trip. I think he can even just artive without a visa and get stamped in for 45 days and extend that for a further 30 days. He then needs to do a border bounce and can come back in again without a visa for another 45 days plus get another 30 days extention. Suggest to put your mind at ease you ask this question on the group Thai Visa Advice as the moderators are very clued up.

@Andy *******
the 45 day visa exempt ends April 1st so if he doesn't get a tourist visa before he travels he can only get 30 days and extend for 30 more.

@Brandon ***********
I read somewhere the 45 day visa exempt has been extended to the end of 2023 but this can change any time.

you are completely.wrong on both accounts. Not sure where you are getting this information from, but it's incorrect.

@Andy *******
you read wrong. There was a TAT proposal but TAT proposes something every few days and 95% of them go nowhere

Good luck.
Brandon ************
@Andy *******
unfortunately that's incorrect. All visas effective are the day they are issued and the time starts from that day. Even before evisa when you had to mail your passport to the embassy and wait for it to come back, you'd lose some time from your visa because it was in the mail.
Mitchell *******
The 6 months starts at some point during application. Then you have multiple 60 day stamps (leave and come back) within that time frame. So, if you apply on March 30. Get it April 5th, you have until October 4th to enter. If you enter April 5th, you have to leave (or extend) by June 4th. Go somewhere, come back. Repeat.

This is my understanding.
Andy ********
@Brandon ***********
Not true. His visa will have a time by which he has to use (normally 3 months), but it starts from when he actually uses it.
Steve *******
@Andy *******
Visa validity starts the day it's issued, the multi-entry tourist visa is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.
Andy ********
@Steve ******
I think the terminology is confusing people. When the Visa is issued you have to use it withing a certain period which will be stamped on the Visa ( in the diagram Brandon provided this is section 4). You can start to use the visa at any point from when you recieved it to the use by date. The first day you actually use ot is when the duration starts so for a 6 month visa if you get it issued on Jan 1st and use it to enter Thailand on Jan 2nd it lasts 6 months from Jan 2nd. If you get it issued on Jan 1st but dont use it until Feb 1st it will last 6 months from Feb 1st and not 6 months from Jan 1st.
Steve *******
@Andy *******
You're mistaken. A multi entry tourist visa has a validity of 6 months from the day it's issued. Each entry will get you stamped into the country for 60 days. If it was issued on 1st Jan it can only be used untill 1st July.
Brandon ************
@Andy *******
there's a big difference between how long a VISA is valid for and how long you get stamped in for. The validity date starts the day it's issued.
Andy ********
@Brandon ***********
Everything i said your photo confirms. You get issued the visa by the Thai Government and have to use it within a certain time. If its a 6 month visa the clock starts ticking the day you first enter Thailand and not the date it was issued. The date you must enter Thailand is within a certain time from when it was issued.
Brandon ************
@Andy *******
there's no such thing as a 6 month entry stamp.
Andy ********
@Brandon ***********
I never said there was i said a 6 month Visa....please keep up at the back🤦‍♂️
Kool *******
@Andy *******
there is no 6 month visa of any kind. There are 60 day, 90 day, and 1 year visas, and extensions, but there are no 6 month visas. There is a multi-entry tourist visa that is valid for 6 months from the time it was issued, but then when you enter Thailand you get a 60 day entry stamp that you can extend for another 30 days once before you have to leave Thailand. Being that your multi-entry visa still has time left in the 6 months from the time it was issued, you can cross the border, and come right back to get another 60 day entry stamp, and can do another 30 day extension. You can enter and leave Thailand as many times as you want in that six months, but there is no 6 month visa entry stamp. The only way someone would get stamped in for only 6 months is if their passport expires in 6 months when applying for the one year extension under a different visa extension type, or with a long term visa requiring health insurance, but the insurance policy is only for 6 months. Those are the only situations where someone would be stamped in for 6 months. You are way off in your supposed details.
Andy ********
@Kool ******
We are all talking about the 6 month METV. (Which is a Visa by the way). Yes, you only get stamped in for 60 days at a time and can extend it by 30 days at immigration within Thailand. It is not valid for 6 months from the date it is issued it is valid for 6 months from the date it was first used. Why would they have 2 dates on it .....!!
Brandon ************
@Andy *******
there's 2 dates on a visa. Date of issue and enter before date. Those dates don't magically change when you enter Thailand. The VISA is valid from the day it's issued. Your ENTRY STAMP has the date you enter and tells you when you have to leave. That doesn't change a single thing about your visa which is still valid from the day it was issued and expires the date that's written on the visa.
Brandon ************
@Andy *******
you're completely wrong.

It should be fine. He's going to have to do a border run or something before he flies back in Sept though because that tourist visa isn't going to get him all the way to the wedding.

yes he will actually not come back to Thailand and will fly back from Cambodia where he will leave Thailand in August and the 30 day arrival visa in Cambodia.

that's even better. Another entry might look a little worse overall.

yes so that puts him back here in early September. Then thinking he would apply from Canada for a multiple entry to go back in October/ November. I just didn’t know if immigration would issue him that quickly again?? He meets all the qualifications with money in the bank etc for the multiple entry.
Brandon ************
@Carrie *******
immigration doesn't matter. It's the embassy. And I would think it would be fine but start the application ASAP after he arrives because sometimes the embassies are slow.

oh right!! I knew it was the embassy🤦‍♀️not immigration!

I think he can extend it in country (for 30 days) and then needs to do a border bounce.
