800k baht is far more than what is needed to live here comfortably. Very few Thais spend that much in a year.

This is BS. There is no requirement. A friend of mine was freaking out because he’s getting ready to come over here and read the Bangkok Post article. He called the Thai embassy and was told not to believe everything in the media, that there is no requirement (yet).
