US citizens do not get visa on arrival. They are entitled to an exempt of visa entry. 60 days with no visa and can extend in country for another 30 days.
Best to show a means of leaving Thailand either return ticket or onward ticket, airlines like to be sure you're going to leave. And yes, you get up to 60 days without a visa.
same in many countries if you are in a relationship. You gave them money, they let you down, and there's no proof or evidence it was given with legally binding conditions, so hard to enforce repayment.
