In addition to some of the suggestions above, you may of course Book a Fully Refundable Ticket, and then cancel after arrival (though you will need to wait for refund/credit).
BTW - Many major Credit Cards also include free limited Travel Insurance when you book your travel on the card -- e.g. Trip Delay, Lost Luggage etc. Check your Bank Card's website for details. I've successfully made claims in past and been reimbursed, though not without a lot of pushing.
Ya, b/c like you said didn't have a receipt (and it happened over 5 years ago????). btw -- just b/c an airline denies your claim, isn't the end of the road. That's what Courts are for.
Ha ya new if new means living abroad and traveling the World for past 12+ years., and that includes living in Thailand seasonally (3-4mos) for same time, and well aware of the law.
