Don't go to Vientiane. They changed their system. Use search function in group. Go elsewhere... Savannakhet, Vietnam, Hong Kong etc.

 yes no appointment needed in Savannakhet. They do require some other things that Vientiane does not, like a copy of a bank statement but that's easy.

 that's not true - it's yours and you can do whatever you want with it. It's better to take it abroad, just in case. But don't lose it!

 yes that's true if they are familiar with Thailand. But often they ask for a "residence card" and since Thai expats generally don't have those, I find a work permit does the trick. But point taken.

It would be wise to carry your work permit. Airlines might ask for it if you enter Thailand on a one way ticket.
