What I was thinking was to try, with 20 k cash in hand. But I'm worried about the no proof of onward travel. Maybe I should buy a ticket to Penang for 60 days after my arrival, and then go and try to get a visa there. Bought my ticket in a hurry, and didn't have time to apply before leaving.

Over and back within half an hour. Would have been quicker if I'd remembered my address. Needed to look it up as they want a street address. Did not bother with the market. They keep your psssport as you enter Myanmar and give you a yellow receipt which i presented to the officer accross the street three minutes later. He had to call across the road to the office that holds the passports for them to bring it across. Easy peasy! The lsdy at the passport chechppint re-entering Thailand would not sawatdee me or even crack a smile. But she did stamp me in until Feb 12th so I'm happy.
