What are the options for expats on METV in Chiang Mai to extend their stay without using a company for a border run?

Hi, I'm on a metv and my first 60 days is about to run out, I have just about a week left. I'm currently in Chiang Mai and plan to hang around here for a while. I've seen a few 'border run' offers but I wonder if there is a cheaper but still easy way doing this myself?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses options for extending stay in Thailand on a METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa) without using a company for a border run. Key points include taking a bus to a nearby border (like Mae Sai) for a cheaper option, extending the METV for an additional 30 days at an immigration office for 1,900 baht, and clarifying the process for ensuring another 60-day entry. Tips involve understanding the visa's validity, planning border runs, and necessary documentation to ease the process.

Over and back within half an hour. Would have been quicker if I'd remembered my address. Needed to look it up as they want a street address. Did not bother with the market. They keep your psssport as you enter Myanmar and give you a yellow receipt which i presented to the officer accross the street three minutes later. He had to call across the road to the office that holds the passports for them to bring it across. Easy peasy! The lsdy at the passport chechppint re-entering Thailand would not sawatdee me or even crack a smile. But she did stamp me in until Feb 12th so I'm happy.

What are hours for the border crossing at Mae Sai? Do they close up shop at some pint?😀

Thanks! On my way now.😁

They started closing at 9PM back in 2015

sorry - maybe I am confused... If you are on your first 60 days... You can extend another 30 days... You shouldn't have to do a border run. Normally its' 60+30 per visit. Exentensions are 1800B +

day at the nearest immigration.

The thing is getting a 30 day extension on any entry but the very last one of an METV doesn't add any days to the amount of time you can wring out of that visa. (9 months max).

Also depending on where you are sometimes it's cheaper to border-bounce to activate another 60 day entry rather than pay 1900baht for a 30 day extension.

Thank you all so much, I will most likely do the green line run then. One question about the visa to burma, is it better to do it online rather than pay at entry?
Ivan ************
No pay at entry. It's only $10, it's a special price for just going in and out of Tachileik. The online visa lets you go anywhere in the country but it is $50, and you don't need it to border bounce.

I think there are several detailed posts on doing this (either on external blogs or maybe even in this forum). Basically, you take Green Bus (
*********************************************************************
I did this last week and it was quite easy. I recommend taking the 08:00 bus to Mae Sai and the 15:30 bus back. If you really hustle you might be able to make the 14:30 bus but I wouldn't add the unnecessary worry/stress. Mark mentioned 350 for a VIP seat. I just went with the regular (205) seat each way. The main difference is the VIP seat is much wider. You can also buy your ticket online (pay at 7-11) if you don't want to take an extra trip to the bus station.

Once you arrive at the Mae Sai bus station just hop on one of the red trucks and for 15 baht they will take you directly to the border. That is pretty easy as well. Stamp out of Thailand and walk across the bridge and then pay the entrance fee to Myanmar (US$10 with a crisp, clean bill or 500 THB). They will ask you if you plan to go shopping or not. If you don't want to shop in the local market just say no and they will literally walk you across the street, get your passport stamped and you can turn right around and re-enter Thailand. Whole thing took me about 20 minutes I think. Then look for the red trucks again (parked outside the 7-11) and get back to the station. There is a Tesco near the station (you can get off the red truck close to it) where you can grab lunch if you don't want to look for a place near the border itself. I did everything, including a leisurely stroll around the Tesco after lunch and was back waiting for the bus by 15:00.

That's very relieving. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, Tod!
Tod *********
@Kor***
, you heard wrong that is totally incorrect :/
Korrin ***********
I heard that if you apply for the 30 day extension and then try to do a visa run at the end they are likely to decline your reentry.
Tod *********
@Kor***
, go get a 30 day extension at the immigration office for 1900baht THEN worry about your long term options.
Korrin ***********
😪 the first options sounded so much easier.
Tod *********
@Kor***
, The thai consulate in Yangon charges $40USD too.

Also remember, you'd need a visa for the country you're going to as well. Only Malaysia lets most people in for free. You'd buy a visa on arrival to Lao, to Cambodia and you'd buy a visa to Burma from the burmese consulate or online before you went there.

The thai consulates work where you go there and turn in your application in the morning between 9 to 11 (or so) and then you pick up your passport with the visa in it the next afternoon between about 1 to 4.
Korrin ***********
Ah.... Those are all different currencies haha

I waz thinking Lao or Burma.
Tod *********
@Kor***
, any idea what thai consulate you are thinking of going to in Asia to get a tourist visa?

In Lao both consulates there charge 1000baht.

In Vietnam both consulates there charge $40USD

In Malaysia all three consulates there charge 150RM
Korrin ***********
Any idea on how much that costs?
Tod *********
@Kor***
, you need to go to a thai consulate in another country and BUY a single entry tourist visa which gets you stamped in for 60 days when you enter thailand.
Korrin ***********
Oh... So where do i go to get a 60 day? Cuz I'm only on a 30 day exempt currently.
Jeff ******
@Korrin **********
This time I was just doing a bounce to get a new 30 day exemption but I was previously on a METV and did the same thing and yes, did get my new 60 days.
Tod *********
@Kor***
, ONLY if you hold a valid 6 month METV.

If all you're doing is border-bouncing without a visa you get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.

And remember you can only get TWO 30 day visa exempt entry stamps by a land border crossing in a calendar year.

Which means the year resets on Jan 1 ;)
Korrin ***********
And this all got you 60 days - instead of 30??
Tod *********
you need to understand how that 6 month METV work
@Kor***
,

The visa is valid for 6 months from the date they issued it to you

It is good for unlimited entries into thailand with each entry getting you stamped in for 60 days.

Once the 60 day stamp is running out you either go to the immigration office and get a 30 day extension for 1900baht

OR

You go to a border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country then stamp right back into thailand to get another 60 day stamp.

You do that for the validity of the visa itself.

There's no way you can stay inside the country longer than 90 days (60 day entry and 30 day extension) per entry on that visa.

If you're in Chiang Main, catch the "green line" bus to the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with Burma. It cost 10USD or 500baht to stamp in-n-out of Burma then back into thailand and you'd get a 60 day stamp.

@Thomas *********
You can get a 6 month METV from some of the thai consulates in Australia. They don't have the residency requirements. I think the thai consulate in Perth is the closest.
Steve ********
Got all three, although my onward travel is in April next year, not within 60 days. Fingers crossed.
Tod *********
@Steve *******
be prepared with the 3 proof ofz (funds, onward travel, lodging) and hope for the best. That's all you can do..
Steve ********
With all the scaremongering recently about IOs cracking down on serial tourist visas, I wonder if this strategy will work for much longer. I am about to head back to Bangkok with a new METV and I am quite nervous about my encounter with the IO on Saturday. Maybe I shouldn't read these forums and go in blind. Less stress?
Robert *******
Pilinka Wiseman The visa is valid for 6 months:

First entry 60 days

Second entry 60 days

Third entry 60 days

just before the valid until date another border run for 60 days

and these last 60 days, get extended with the Extension of Stay for 30 days at your local immigration office
Pilinka *********
@Tod ********
so is it better to bounce out and back in after the initial 60 days, or to get an extension and then bounce after that? I'm confused as to how one would get 9 months if the visa is two lots of 60 days each extendable by 30 which would equal 6 months. ??
Steve ********
After your METV runs out the final time, you will need to go out of Thailand and buy a new visa. I don't know if you can get the METV in many countries because I always end up going back home to Melbourne, Australia before my 6 months runs out. I usually need a holiday from Thailand after about 5 months and head back home for a month or two. I then just buy a new 6 month METV for my next visit. I never had the need to try and wring out every possible week out of each one, but that is just how I operate. :)
Thomas **********
Tod, what happens after 9 months if you want to stay?

also while we're at it, do you know, is it possible to get a metv for a US citizen currently outside the US?

thx
Tod *********
@Kor***
, the way to get the most out of that 6 month METV is to exit/re-enter just prior to the "enter before" date on the visa itself. That will get you 60 more days and then you can extend that at the immigration office 30 days for 1900baht.

Most people who have that visa can wring almost 9 months in country out of it by bouncing every 60 days, once again just before the visa expires and then extend that last entry by 30 more days.

Good Luck (y)
Korrin ***********
Thanks for breaking it down for me, Todd. I've been doing the visa run every 30 days so far so having to do it instead every 60 would be great.
Korrin ***********
I'm hoping to stay here longer than 30 days.
Korrin ***********
I know. But I would like to get a 60 day. Not only 30 at the thai embassy here.
Robert **********
And you definitely can. You can stay as long as you wish if you follow the rules.
Lisa *******
I just went to immigration and asked them to extend my visa. All I had to do was pay 1900 baht.. This was in hua hin.. Took 10 minutes max.
Korrin ***********
I need to do a visa run from Chiang Mai soon as well. I'd much rather do it without a company. If you end up going on your own let me know if I can tag along.
Korrin ***********
How do i contact them??
Walter *********
Mini bus to Mae Sai border and return for ~650 baht r/t. Lv 8.00 Am ret Chiangmai by ~5.30 PM They will pick you up at your hotel/apt in most cases
Robert **********
Or do as I did today and get a 30 day extension on your METV and then decide on a "border run". Girl at the counter thanked me for having the required things in hand. About 20 minutes from walk in to walk out. Oh, this was at Krabi Immigration office, probably not as busy as Chiang Mai.
Mark ***************
You can just take a bus to the border. Oneway VIP ticket is just 350.
