I share all your sentiments but building thousands of condos to sell in US dollars GBP or Euros is big business. They don't have housing shortage in Thailand. Plenty of land and always more high rise blocks sprouting skywards
that's what I initially thought too! Seemingly makes no sense but it is the reason for the change which I'll try to explain. There's a belief amongst Tourist Department and Hotel owners group that "Tourists " who stay longer are not using expensive hotels but are using airbnb condos belonging to other foreigners who rent out illegally. The Thai hotel owners resent foreign landlords for competing for customers. They want Tourists who they imagine will only book two or three weeks in a hotel and not rent a condo for three months from a "horrible foreigner" lol
They need tourists more now than ever. Lost tourists after earthquake and now POTUS Trump has done tourists a favor by massive economic trade pressure on Thailand. In March Thai elites (greedy hotel owners) pushed to reduce visa exemption to 30 days. They didn't know about coming earthquake or Trump making it hard to earn by exporting to USA. Suddenly the Thai government and elites have become quiet. The arrogance towards tourists is now an expensive luxury they can I'll afford.
