TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around using foreign debit or credit cards to make cash withdrawals at Thai banks rather than through ATMs. Participants share mixed experiences, noting that some banks like Krungthai and Siam Bank facilitate such transactions, typically requiring just a passport and the card. Comments also highlight potential fees, exchange rates, and necessary precautions. While some users report successful transactions without additional fees, others warn about international withdrawal charges and advocate for using ATMs for better rates. Overall, clarity on bank policies and personal bank terms are emphasized.

@David ******
was very simple and straight forward had to queue for about ten minutes I used my debit card I think the ten minutes was just to check I had the available funds to be honest I withdrew several other amounts over a five month period in excess of 100,000 baht to pay for various operations I needed and a large plot of farmland to develop into a fish farm

I used a personal account I had previously put the funds into before I left the uk found the whole process simple and the bank manager very helpful especially after he had checked availability of funds

I had no thai bank account just me, my debit card and passport just entered my pin and left with the cash on each occasion with minimal fuss hope this helps with your inquiry. Bob

if you use an ATM, the exchange rate is set by your credit card provider. If you draw Thai Baht over a bank counter, it is the Thai bank that sets the exchange rate. Now you can guess, WHO gives you a more favourable rate? Even taking into account the 220.- Baht ATM fee, the withdrawal at the ATM could actually be the better choice (if you draw the maximum amount THB, which is 20.000.- THB on most ATM's and 30.000.- THB on a Krungsri Bank ATM)
David *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Nongnuch *******
you are INCORRECT. Cards are either visa or mastercard. Visa and mastercard use interbank exchange rates for foreign currency transactions. Some foreign banks add foreign transactions fees on top of conversion and some do not. I am speaking from years of experience obtaining cash advance foreign currency transactions so I know what I'm talking about. It's all done on visa or mastercard network. Thai bank only sets rates where foreigner asks for currency conversion. Also you ignore the 220 baht ATM fee is discriminatory against foreign customers.

I recommend Cash Pickup on XE app. Siam Commercial Bank collection only 100 baht.
Nongnuch ********
@David ******
my VISACARD issuing bank doesn't charge anything when I withdraw at a Thai ATM. So I only get hit by the 220.- Baht ATM fee, and the exchange rate is set by VISA. The rate is ALWAYS much better than any rate over a bank counter. I know what I am talking about. The problem is: YOU! The problem is, you choose a credit card that came with bad conditions set by your home bank . . . . . . "Som Nam Na" we say in Thailand
David *******

@Nongnuch *******
I'm not guessing ok. I've done it 100 times. Credit or debit card. Cash advance same exchange rate as ATM from visa or mastercard. You don't understand Cash advance. It isn't a currency conversion. That's done by visa or mastercard. My uk debit card has FREE foreign currency transactions so again you're wrong. My old barclays credit card was free for foreign currency transactions many years recently started charging. I want to use my debit card for foreign transactions without ATM discrimination. So either cash advance or XE app cash collection. Beats the ATM scam every time.
Nongnuch ********
@David ******
I do NEVER chose "dynamic currency conversion" at an ATM. I would be stupid to do so

you ignore the fact that Europeans get better conditions than U.S. Americans. In America, you get ripped off by doctors and banks. In Europe, they got health insurance for everybody and good conditions for banking. If you are from the U.K., you might get similarily screwed. Barclays? Yes, it used to be free for foreign withdrawals and I think for EU-members, it still is

Drawing Thai Baht at an ATM using your credit card gives you the daily FT rate, and that's a really good rate. If your card-issuing bank doesn't charge any commission for using the card abroad, it means you will withdraw Thai Baht for a really good exchange rate

The bank that operates the ATM will charge a flat 220.- THB fee for each withdrawal. That’s why you should withdraw a high amount

At most ATMs you can draw 20.000.- THB in one swoop. At the yellow Krungsri Bank ATM you can get 30.000.- THB with one draw.

You shouldn't withdraw 2000.- THB or 5000.- THB from the ATM. In this case. the 220.- THB fee would hurt!

CAUTION is advised at an ATM: if the ATM offers to show you the exchange rate in your currency on the monitor (dynamic currency conversion), you should ALWAYS decline! You will lose a lot of money if you agree to the “conversion”!

You will never see the exchange rate applied when using the normal withdrawal method. You will be able to check the rate later in your account statements. However, I can rest assure you that the credit card provider rate is a very good rate!

One of the advantages of a credit card is: You don't have to take a lot cash with you.

The disadvantage of a credit card however is: If you lose it, or make a mistake at the ATM and the ATM eats your card, you will be left standing in the rain

On the southern islands the exchange rate is always pretty poor. On the islands I recommend you exchange over a bank counter. Always compare between the bank rate and the rate offered by private moneychangers in the streets

The exchange rate over across a bank counter is rather mediocre, but in the south and on the islands, it is usually the better choice.

Using your credit card or debit card for a change across a bank counter saves you the 220.- THB fee that would otherwise be charged at the ATM. However, the rate is rather poor and you could be charged for using the card, because the process either could be equivalent to making a purchase, and depending on the card conditions, you might be charged a commission by the issuing bank

Exchanging cash in the “Floor B” Airport basement right after arriving at the Suvarnabhumi BKK airport is a perfect choice for all travellers. You will get an excellent exchange rate with each of the three money changers at the platform of the “Airport Rail Link”. WARNING: do never exchange in the upper airport levels

Don’t forget: exchanging cash at private money changers will not get you any better rate than withdrawing at an ATM with your credit card.

With the exception of a marginally better rate at the green and orange Superrich booths in Bangkok and the yellow/black TT-Exchange booths in Pattaya, your credit card is the perfect choice

@David ******
so what’s the consensus? I’m getting lost…

If you use a credit card it is a cash advance with inflated interest charges, even if you immediately pay it off, as told to me by CC company prearrival to Thailand. Has someone definitively given a bank that does the transaction at $0 fee? I saw some say Krungthai, were you able to confirm that? Would be some good info.

And I love how people come on here to prove how smart they are and ALWAYS gloss over the dam question. Happened to me the other day and it was so bad, just deleted the stupid post. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Nongnuch ********
@Eric *****
my VISACARD is not a "cash advance", as my VISA account is always in the plus, I hold over 15.000.- USD in it all the time, earning interest! My credit card account NEVER is in the minus . . . . . . It's like I told
@David ******
before = if you fall for a credit card with such ridiculous conditions, you gotta pay your dues dearly
Eric ******
@Nongnuch *******
so it’s more like a debit card? I just know I hoped to do the cash advance with a CC and immediately pay it off, and was told I would still pay more overall than the ATM fee was here. If there’s a better way, I’d love to know, I’m all for it.

I'm focusing on debit card cash advance because my uk starling card is zero fees for foreign transactions. I just wanna use this debit to avoid local transaction costs and I understand it's possible. I will try it and post an update

Re credit card ...my old barclaycard had a promotion for three years...the bank in philippines happily gave me cash advance thirty times or more over three years. They were happy doing it cos they imagine it will be profitable when Barclaycard (visa) hit me with massive interest charges. So that was great. Never any problem. Of course I instantly made GBP payments to barclaycard of the exact transaction value in GBP same day using the app. Never incurred a single penny charge from Barclaycard ever. Their promo charged interest per day on outstanding balance but my balance would be £500 for less than one hour. NO CHARGES. you need to check with your card provider what their charges are but in UK starling is free of foreign transaction charges. Barclays have introduced another new card too. Worth checking that. I'll get it next time I'm back in uk.

I have a Jet Blue and Wyndham card from Barklay’s and I have 0% offers in my email right now. Might have to look in to that. Without the promo offer of 0%, the fees would have been higher right?

both my DKB Debit Credit Card and my DKB VISACARD Credit card are free of charges for withdrawals in Asia. It's been like that for 18 years. I got a SANTANDER Mastercard as they kept reimbursing the ATM fee until 3 years ago. I don't use the Santander card any more

Someone told me about getting a Wise debit card you can use to add and withdraw money from Thai Bank, however before I left the US , they had paused issuing cards to US residents, not sure why, I think you can still use a digital one though. I plan on checking back for updates.

Yes, in Krungsai Bank, (yellow bank), Central Festival, Pattaya.

Used Nationwide Debit card. Just need passport.

Can withdraw large amounts as long as funds in bank back in UK, with only 1 atm charge of approx 220bht and a non sterling transaction set by visa rules I believe.
David *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@John ********
i have a nationwide account too but I avoid using it cos Nationwide are not cheap with foreign currency transactions. The "non sterling transaction " fee is Nationwide's mark-up. I drag cash from Nationwide to Starling. Use Starling for foreign transactions free of charge. Very easy on app too. Nationwide will add fees if you paid your hotel in Baht. Starling is free. Use Starling is my advice. Then find a thai bank who provide cash advance without applying ATM fees. Cash advance is not a machine. (Automated telling machine ) . In the past cash advance was free. Certainly I had free cash advances on my barclaycard for three years in philippines.

@David ******
It is rare that I have used my card actually in Thailand as I usually take UK cash & exchange it at TT Exchange for baht but I took the gist of the question to be :- Was it possible to get Thai money from a bank with a UK credit or debit card.

Going back quite a lot of years, I remember there was no charge from any of the ATM's, & you could usually get upto around 10,000 bht a time, but as time went on charges were brought in with the Krungsai Bank being the last bank to impose this.

If any of the above is info is incorrect, I would like to be corrected.

your understanding is correct. I also use uk cash but for long or ongoing stays that becomes unrealistic. Other low cost option is use of xe app. Can select "cash pick up" method and collect baht converted from GBP debited from uk bank and go collect from Siam Commercial Bank. Bigger amounts than ATM and cost is 100 baht.

good question. Yes most cards have fees but some offer free foreign transactions. I have uk account Starling Bank. Free foreign currency transactions but that's only at the UK end! If i use a thai ATM I'd be forced accept discriminatory charges by the ATM provider (thai bank). If I can avoid ATM fees with my Starling debit card effectively it's zero charge service to withdraw thai baht. Only highly competitive mastercard exchange rate will apply.
Samuel ********
Tried that to be told my debit card doesn’t have my middle name on it.

I guarantee the visa or mastercard rate on a zero fee and no atm charge basis will be the best value deal with the possible exception of changing foreign currency with most competitive money changers. Bringing in money from home country electronically and not hard cash....best deal is cash advance visa or mastercard rate free of charges.
Eric ******
@David ******
Actually not. That’s considered a cash advance and it’s usually a very high interest rate. Even if you immediately pay off the balance, interest still accrues. I talked to my CC company about that before I came over and got shot down. Thought I had it figured out, lol.

Bart **************
@David ******
I've read several times that people did it, but it should really not be possible. Taking out money is an international withdrawal transaction which costs 220 baht an ATM and letting a person do it for you should neither void the 220 nor be a free addition service for non-costumers. You should incur the 220 as usual plus a whole lot extra for the work they do. It's a western union kind of service which should incur that kind of fees.

Taking out money from a bank that is not your own is weird in the first place, it shouldn't even be possible. I don't know how people pulled it off but I struggle to believe anyone could possibly received this service, let alone at 0 fees.
Eric ******
@Bart *************

Ivan ************
@Bart *************
it's a cash advance. It's a standard thing and it is possible.
Bart **************
@Ivan ***********
it may be possible that what you guys are doing is an international payment, for which the bank incurs a 3% fee which they'll trivially not pay out of their own pockets, and on your end you're paying a conversion fee to visa or Mastercard which also is far from negligible. Think of 3% as well. That could be it. Bank employees from banks that are not your own accessing your account? In a different country? In a different world part. Come on, guys. No. Just no.
Bart **************
@Ivan ***********
it's not possible to withdraw cash from a bank with just your passport and a bank card. These employees are not authorized to even know that you have an account elsewhere, let alone take money from it. That should be trivial.

go back to sleep Bart! I used exact same over the counter cash advance service for THREE years twice a month in Philippines. Bank cards use CHIP & PIN technology as required also in ATM. Bank teller simply places card in a desktop POINT OF SALE type reader which communicates with the issuing Bank checking PIN and available balance to authorize the withdrawal. It's easy peasy lemon squeezy. Maybe you'll need a diagram to understand it?
Bart **************

maybe you need to go back to sleep yourself because you just confirmed that the transaction uses the same method as a point of sale ($$$!). And you think you have been saving money 🤣

extra,work? Staff are,in branch anyway. They don't come to work that day especially for my cash advance. That's banking service. They belong to mastercard or visa,hub and they service cards issued by those two organizations. No extra,costs to the bank. The lost ATM fee is no different than Thai cards being free. The fee for foreign cards is inequitable and discriminatory. Uk atm doesn't discriminate. It would be illegal.
Iain *********
@David ******
staff would spend time serving someone making an international withdrawal when they could be serving customers that make money for the bank. And if too many people were making international withdrawals they might have to.take on extra staff.

Some UK atms decline many Thai atm cards. UK ATMs can charge fees for cards issued outside the UK and EEA and some operators do.

In Thailand, some ATMs charge Thai cards issued in other provinces a fee between 10, 20 or 30 baht charge.
