can't apply for a 12 month extension without first changing that tourist visa to a 90 day non-o. THEN he can extend that 12 months... You can't extend a tourist visa more than 30 days

residency? That's very confusing. He has the bank account already, if you mean obtain a 'resident certificate' he doesn't need that to apply for his visa. 'Residency' in Thailand is a completely different process....

@Andrew *******
'can I do this?' not without doing a change of visa to a "90 day non-o" from your tourist visa.

Then you extend that 12 months.

You need to check your timings

You have a step missing...

You have to apply first for a change of visa to a 90 day non-o.

Then (only then) can you apply for the 12 month extension of stay.

NB the 90 day non-o doesn't require any seasoning of the money before you submit the application.

The seasoning is for the 12 month extension

then you'll need a residence cert from there...

The Chonburi residence cert is valid for 30 days, yes you could do it yourself in Chonburi. You'll also need a health cert, watch the video online, and get to the office before 7am to stand a chance of getting a ticket for that day. The agents will be there before 6am to secure the first 30 or so tickets

They want paperwork demonstrating that in the the last 12 months the balance hasn't dropped below 400k and was back to 800k 2 months before you extend again. Hence they want to see a full 12 months statement. They know that the passbook won't show transactions made online, where you could have taken the money out and then returned it, maintaining the balance but breaking immigration rules, however a 12 month statement would show this.

You'd possibly be better off just leaving and coming back to Thailand on the normal 30 day visa-exempt and extending that a further 30 days if needed.

It would all depend on your travel dates and existing stamp
