I checked off the box "embassy doesn't provide letter" and got my stamp today.
But yes, I think it depends on who you get. I had a multiple entry visa from back home, valid till the

so could technically have left the country, gotten new Thai Pass and come back for 2 more months but with the world as it is, I cut my losses and settled for one month and my 2nd covid extension (2 months and now one more month)
I left 14 months ago after being told the same thing, I was sitting in the airport at the gate when a friend sent me a link telling me they would change the rules 24hours and 5 minutes after I left...
You can get a test done outside if you have been travelling in provinces with high corona or if you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive.
it was, or at least it was today but rules change all the time. I wasn't aware of it till i stood there but I managed to talk my way into a free test :p
