 by international accepted standard, a tourist visit is no more than 90 days. If you stay more than that you usually have to get a local license.

 Were you a tourist ? Did you get an official receipt for the fine?

Since a couple of years ago you are allowed to film the cops and complain if needed.

Foreign license + IDP is totally legit if you stay less than 90 days in the country. Thailand has signed the international transport agreement back in the 1960s.

 For less than 90 days stay, many foreign licenses are accepted if they are written in English.
