So I missed my window to get a motorcycle license in my home state. Is it possible to get a Thai driver's license while I'm there to legally drive a motorcycle?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to obtain a Thai motorcycle driver's license even if you missed the window to get a motorcycle license in your home state. You will need to complete the necessary tests, including a driving test, and you might be able to get a license while on a tourist visa. However, if you do not have a motorcycle license from your home country, you may face challenges in getting an International Driving Permit (IDP), as it generally requires a valid license from your home country. Some commenters noted that for short stays (less than 90 days), some foreign licenses may be accepted if written in English, but this can vary depending on the situation and local police enforcement.
may I ask... will a regular tourist visa work? I keep reading that you need to have more than 60 days on your visa, is this true or should I get an STV?

Theoretically not allowed if you don't have a long stay Visa. Allowed tho, if you have a work permit or can provide a residence certificate by immigration or a residence affidavit by your embassy (if they do).
I had a thai motorcycle license two yrs ago as a long term tourist

Go to an approved driving school. One is called Myron. They charge approximately 1500 THB and they do everything. It takes 5 days to do but not 8 hours per day. They do practical and classroom instruction. They also do the testing both on bike and exam. Then they give you all paperwork to go to Land and Transfer office. Just go with a medical certificate and certificate of residence and pay the fee. EASY
if you have a permanent Thai drivers license (means renewed at least once over the initial 2 years temporary one) you can go DLT and get one in less than a morning. At least before the scamdemic came.
his post said he doesn’t have a valid license in his own country, therefore a IDP can’t be issued for a motorcycle, and hence cannot ride on legally in Thailand.
the only way to get a Thai motorcycle license in Thailand legally, without having one from your own country, is to do the whole process from scratch in Thailand.
no he will not, as they are two separate licenses in Thailand, and they will quite clearly see the N/A stamped next to the motorcycle section at the back of the IDP. Have had many friends here over the years try that as well, all were rejected.

Doe anyone actually pay to take a test to drive a motorbike in Thailans though?? I've hired one many times and only have a UK driving licence
I took my motorcycle test in Thailand. 1st day watch 6 hour video. (Most played on their phone for the 6 hours.) Second day you write the test (the test is available online if you want to study it first). Then you ride your bike through some pylons, and along a 20 feet long by 1 foot wide plank. You must be on the plank for 10 seconds or longer. The cost 200 bahts. It is valid for 2 years. Note, I am a resident and had to show proof of residency and my passport.
oh ahaha very interesting if that's the case I may look to do that then, seems like a good few hours of fun and a very interesting experience, coulf you send me a link or something I can go to to look at this please?
I think you do. I think the cost for a motorcycle license is 200 THB.

Yes you can a license in Thailand, even on a tourist visa. Since you don't have one already, it will take 2 days.
I recommend you use a service like fat boys to help stream line the process for you.
The biggest issue you might have is getting a resident certificate on short notice. As a tourist you can't get from immigration, you can use you embassy. Different embassy have different requirements. The US embassy you just do an affidavit saying what your address is. The problem is appointment are typically booked out several weeks.
you got a resident cert from immigration? You should not be able to on visa exempt or TR60 because you have to file 90 day report first before a resident cert can be issued...which you would not do as those visa options do not allow you stay longer than 90 days.
oh, so I might be able to do it in the US before I guess leave? Does it prove my residency here in the states? I thought it had to be where you're living when you go to driving school in Thailand?
for Thailand driver license you need address in Thailand. If you are US passport, just got embassy and you do an affidavit with your thailand address on it. It cost 50usd. You will need to book an appointment about 3 weeks out.
I was fined many times riding in Chiang Mai WITH Canadian motorcycle license and IDP. The police would set up a checkstop near Mai Rim and pull over ever westerner and fine them. They would take your passport until fine is payed. When you get pulled over it is up to the police how they will handle the situation. Nothing in Thailand is standard. Policing, immigration, nothing.
Were you a tourist ? Did you get an official receipt for the fine?
Since a couple of years ago you are allowed to film the cops and complain if needed.
Foreign license + IDP is totally legit if you stay less than 90 days in the country. Thailand has signed the international transport agreement back in the 1960s.
Yes, I know Thailand has signed on, so why cannot I drive on an IDP for 1 year as the agreement states? Sometimes the police were legit and gave me a receipt. The fine was 200 bahts. Other times they just picked my pocket for 500 bahts. But if was Friday afternoon then 1000 bahts as they are holding your passport and you will need it before Monday. The thing is they can spot a rental scooter and target you. Now I own a big bike and never get pulled over. They do not target big bikes, only Falang on rentals heading to the attractions in Mae Rim. They are busy with school crossings until 8 am, then head to the underpass between Mae Rim and Chiang Mai and catch all Falangs heading north. Same every day. I do not stop at these checkpoints anymore. Just cruise through. They will not spend the time trying to chase me when there are hundreds of 1 month visitors behind me they can pick pockets from. I have learned a lot living here. One thing for sure is the police go for the low hanging fruit.
Sometimes 200 bahts if receipt given. Sometimes strong-armed for 500 and no receipt. Basically up to them. Funny thing is I now live in a smaller village 3 hours north of Chiangmai and un-helmeted 12 year old's ride scooters with 3 up and the un-helmeted policeman in town does not do anything.

John Bohill sorry, can or can't? I thought you had to have a motorcycle license in your home country then get an international driver permit which is just an extension of your car or motorcycle or both

Ahh, thanks! My problem is it's too late in the year to get a motorcycle license in my state in the US and they won't give me an IDP unless I have my motorcycle license already and today was literally the last day to get it and there were no appointments available.
